Bernardo Parent Bulletin #21
January 8, 2024
Happy 2024 Everyone!
I hope that you had a restful and enjoyable break with your families. The Lyche clan had a blast doing lots of local things such as Ice Skating at Coronado (I looked like a deer on ice out there but didn't fall!), visiting the holiday light show at the Botanical Gardens (if you've never seen it, I highly recommend it), the Nutcracker downtown (ballet is not normally my cup of tea but it was great to see the smiles on my girls' faces as they enjoyed it). I did get to golf twice and found more golf balls than I lost which was fantastic!
I'm excited about the year ahead! Personally, I am resolving to enjoy each day as it comes and to stay "present" in each moment. This is a big challenge for me as I often find myself caught up in worrying about the future and stressing over circumstances that I have little or no control over. My wife once shared that she did not enjoy going to amusement parks with me due to the fact that I was stressed about the lines and rushed our family from one ride to another, more worried about making the most of our time rather than enjoying the experience with our family (I've gotten better at this by the way 😊). While it's prudent to plan ahead and to be organized, what's the point of planning if I can't enjoy the life I am planning for? As the great philosopher Ferris Bueller once said - "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
While it's already been an amazing school year so far, we still have many more exciting activities and adventures in store during the next five months. Here's to staying present and not missing life as we experience it with our loved ones!

Bernardo Students Are Critical Thinkers
In each week's district email to families, our Superintendent Dr. Ibarra discusses attributes from the newly developed EUSD Learner Profile. This past month, the trait of Critical Thinking was highlighted. A critical thinker is recognized as someone who asks questions with confidence and seeks to understand how the world works.
One way that this trait was emphasized here at Bernardo last month was through an experience where our 4th graders learned about genomics and DNA by dissecting and analyzing strawberries. The students had an amazing time of hands-on learning through this science lab and hopefully we inspired some future scientists and engineers! Thank you to one of our awesome parents, Mr. Panchapakesan, and his team from Illumina along with our amazing 4th grade teachers for bringing this program to our school.

Info From Nurse Jeri
We know it can sometimes be difficult to know whether or not your child is well enough to send to school. Our awesome school nurse, Nurse Jeri, created the following chart to help know what to watch for when determining whether or not to send your child back to school after he/she has been ill.
PTA Is Looking For A Spirit Wear Chair-Person
Are you a creative person who would like to volunteer but don't always have time during the school day to help? If so, we might have just the position for you!
Our PTA is looking for a Spirit Wear Chair-Person who would be in charge of ordering and selling spirit wear, utilizing our square up sales software. The PTA is hoping to move to a new online platform for our spirit wear store and to add new options for apparel and logos.
