SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

Smarter Balanced Assessment Data watch

Jon DeJong, Deputy Superintendent
Sarah Wall, Director of Learning and Teaching
Nadya Bush, Assistant Director of Special Programs
Mike Lane, Director of State & Federal Programs
Ron Brown, Director of Instructional Technology
Trisha Craig. Director of Special Education

The Learning and Teaching team prepared a presentation of various types of test data from 3-8 grades and 10th grade. The presentation provided a district-level picture of student achievement in English Language Arts and Math and includes Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA) and iReady results. These same results have been reviewed by District principals and coaches. The SBA data includes results for 2018-19 but also presented longitudinally to reflect the progress of specific groups and sub-groups of students as they move through our system.

The Board asked questions about variables that influence growth among the cohorts and available comparison data of dual language versus non-dual language growth. Staff was asked to provide the Board with a comparison of math scores with other peer districts in our region at a future board meeting.

Dr. Gordon praised District teachers for doing amazing work and pointed out that our educators are giving everything they’ve got. Administration will continue to study the data tp reveal what’s working and find ways to replicate it.

ACTION ITEMS

Food Services Contract watch

Katie Batson, Director of Human Resources

The Wenatchee School District has concluded negotiations with the Food Service Managers for the agreement that expired on August 31, 2019. The District and Local 846-FSM & FS Representing Food Service Managers and Nutrition Service Employees agreed to combine the two bargaining units into one bargaining unit through a Memorandum of Agreement. This eliminates the current Local 846-FSM Food Services Managers contract, moving current FSM bargaining unit members into the Nutrition Service Employees existing collective bargaining agreement. The contract was approved by the Board.

BOARD COMMUNICATION watch

Ms. Knox asked Dr. Gordon to create a future board workshop on the topic of early learning. The Board agreed that this was an important step in understanding the current landscape of early learning in the valley and would provide valuable insight as we move closer to developing a strategic plan.

Ms. Jaecks and Dr. Sandberg will represent the Board at the first Community Conversation on October 9th and will plan to be at a portion of the PAC also happening on the 9th.

Ms. Hemphill and Dr. Vega-Villa discussed their attendance at the recent WASSDA Legislative Assembly and legislative priorities. Ms. Hemphill also shared that she recently met with Representative Kim Schrier regarding the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT watch

Dr. Gordon has invited the District's new SRO, Officer Jared Shepard and current SRO Officer Jared Reindeld to attend the October 22 Board Meeting. The two will share how they’ll be working together to enhance safety and build relationships across the district.

Board school visits will be scheduled monthly for 2-3 Directors at a time. This structure will allow observation of instruction and time with school leaders in a small group setting. Dr. Gordon will provide the Board with prep materials and information to ensure the Board has a background on what they’ll be observing before each visit.
