Congratulations to Isabella Bradburn!
Isabella Bradburn received two major honors this past week. First, Isabella was honored as one of 50 Regional Academic All-Star Honorees by the Indiana Association of School Principals. Academic All-Star distinction recognizes seniors who excel in the classroom first and foremost, but who also are actively involved in their schools and communities, and take on leadership roles in those activities.
Additionally, Isabella was named as an honorable mention for the Governor's STEM team in the area of Science. This award recognizes outstanding high school students who have demonstrated talent and accomplishments in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.
Congratulations Isabella! We are proud of all you continue to do with your time here at SHS!
Our theater department will be performing "Puffs" next week on May 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door. Please come check out all the hard work of our students in action.

April Staff of the Month - Darah Knopp
This is Mrs. Knopp’s 10th year of teaching special education at SHS and 15th year in education overall. She is a proud SHS grad and currently resides in Shelbyville with her husband and two kids. In their free time, her family enjoys traveling to new places, hiking and watching tv series together. One of the things Mrs. Knopp loves about Shelbyville High School is that the people of the building will unite and support each other during good times and rough times. This includes coming together for different causes throughout the year..
Fellow staff members, parents, and students stated the following about Mrs. Knopp:
Mrs. Knopp is someone you can always count on to help in any situation. She is willing to help out her fellow staff members or students.
Darah’s students are like ducklings that follow their leader. She does a great job of making them feel comfortable and showing them their gifts.

Summer Opportunities
SCS Summer Young Writers Camp
Do you love to write? I mean, do you really love to write -- poetry, short stories, and other creative writing? If so, consider the SCS Summer Young Writers Camp for students grades 7-12. The writing camp is facilitated by Mr. Anspaugh, SMS library media specialist, and Mrs. McIntire, SMS language arts teacher, and will be June 12-23 from 9 AM to 12 PM. This is the 14th year for the writing camp, and this year's theme has a sci-fi, time machine twist to it -- Back to the Writing Camp 2 (Part 1 was back in 2015!). The camp meets Monday through Friday for two weeks culminating with the Writers' Celebration on the last Friday. The camp is $30, which includes all materials, snacks, T-shirt, and a field trip to the canal and Indianapolis Historical Society. Campers will write creative writing like poetry, fiction, and non-fiction pieces (no essays!), and have lots of fun doing it. Camp is limited to the first twenty-five students to register. If you are interested, but you are unable to attend both weeks or some days, we will send out what we do for the days you are gone. Please send any questions you may have to Mr. Anspaugh (jtanspaugh@shelbycs.org), and he will send you a registration form.

“Tree Give-away, 5K Tree Trot and Planting Project”
A fundraiser for native trees, a tree planting event and a tree give-away will take place on Saturday, April 29th at Blue River Memorial Park. Check in for the 2nd Annual Tree Trot 5K will begin at 7AM under the pavilion near the central concession stand. The Annual Tree Give-away will begin at 8:30 AM near the splash pad. From 9AM to 1 PM, Shelby County Master Gardeners will host the Spring Garden Sale and Show at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. The Spring Garden Sale and show will have vendors for plants, décor and tools, guest speakers and free children’s activities. In one morning, you can run a 5K or just donate to the Native Tree Walk, get some free trees, purchase some plants, hear some great speakers and practice your planting skills at the Native Tree Walk.
SHS Senior Beau Kenkel will host the 2nd Annual Tree Trot 5K. He is continuing the fundraiser started by Stefanie Howard last year. The 5K will benefit the Native Tree Walk at the park. Early registration costs $30 and will end Monday. Following the 5K, volunteers will plant 10 additional trees at the Native Tree Walk.
For more information on the 5K Tree Trot, or to pre-register go to http://getmeregistered.com/TreeTrot5k.
The City of Shelbyville Stormwater Utility and Shelbyville High School Earth Club will host the tree give-away. The event will be held at Blue River Memorial Park (775 Lee Blvd.) on Saturday, April 29th from 8:30 AM until we run out of trees. Please note that we have moved the give-away from the fairgrounds to the park this year to coordinate with the 5K Tree Trot. Shelby County Recycling District will still hold a Clean Shelby Day Event at the Fairgrounds on May 13th.
The 1000 tree seedlings come from the Department of Natural Resources Vallonia State Nursery. This year, we will offer Red pine, Virginia Pine, Red Oak, Tulip, Bald Cypress, Chestnut Oak, Shagbark Hickory, buttonbush, Silky Dogwood and Black Chokeberry. We try to vary our selection from year to year. The evergreens and redbuds always go first.
The tree give-away and Native Tree Walk would not be possible if not for all of our partners and volunteers. Over 15,700 tree seedlings have been distributed and over 120 native trees planted thanks to the Shelby County Soil and Water Conservation District, Shelbyville High School Earth Club, City of Shelbyville Stormwater Utility, local tree advocate Kris Schwickrath, Gary Nolley and the Blue River Cross Country Course, the Shelby County Recycling District, Shelbyville Parks and Recreation, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
For more information on the give-away or to volunteer to help, please contact Derrick Byers dbyers@cityofshelbyvillein.com, 317.364.4990.
