Cell Phone Policy 2019-20
Cell Phone Policy 2019-20
Procedure for cell phones and headphones for the 2019-2020 school year:
Cell phones will be silent and out of sight in instructional zones.
Wired headphones will only be permitted in instructional zones when connected to a Chromebook and is a requirement to fulfill an assignment where sound is required. Wireless headphones will not be permitted in instructional zones.
The following steps will be followed in instructional zones for students who use their cell phones and/or wireless headphones OR use their wired headphones in a way that is not outlined in the procedure:
1st offense: Student gives phone/headphones to teacher/staff member; parent contact is made; student receives phone/headphones back at the end of the day.
2nd offense: Student gives phone/headphones to teacher/staff member; parent contact is made; parent/guardian picks up phone/headphones from the school.
3rd offense: Student gives phone/headphones to teacher/staff member; student is assigned AIA; parent/guardian picks up phone/headphones from the school.
Rationale:
We want all of our students to “be here” both physically and mentally. Cell phone use during instructional time is a distraction and creates an environment that is not conducive to learning.
We want to teach students that there are times when cell phone use is not appropriate.
We want students to practice communicating with others face to face.

Key Club
Key Club is back! Key Club is an organization that helps students get involved in their community. If your student is looking for a place to serve or needs community service hours, Key Club is a great place to start. Last year, Key Club partnered with Park View Community Mission and Food for Thought to help stock the food pantry and pack HUNDREDS of weekend bags for LCS students to take home on Fridays. We also visited retirement homes, played with puppies at the Humane Society, and wrote letters to veterans. Students will have the opportunity to go to the Key Club District Convention in Baltimore in the spring. Kiwanis provides scholarship opportunities. Meetings are held in the library after school on the 1st Wednesday of the month. We are currently welcoming new members and look forward to the impact that these students will make in the coming school year and beyond.

AP Students
Parents of all AP students: The expectation of LCS is that every student enrolled in an AP class will take the AP Exam for that course in May. If for any reason the student does not take the exam, his GPA will be weighted as an Advanced Class rather than at the AP value.
Although Lynchburg City Schools pays a portion of each exam fee, there is a $40 cost for students per exam. Reduced fees are available due to family financial needs. Tests have to be ordered in October. Thus, all AP test fees are due no later than October 4, 2019. Unpaid fees may result in an obligation which can prohibit students from participating in sports, activities, and school-sponsored events. The preferred method of payment is via MySchoolBucks. However, Mrs. Rice, the bookkeeper, and Mrs. Wise, librarian and AP coordinator, will accept payment by cash or check during regular school hours.
College Board sets the day and time for each exam. Students are aware of the test dates well in advance and should be here on the designated test day to avoid having to pay a $45 late fee to take the make-up exam. Also, if a student does not take an exam, he/she will be charged a $15 restocking fee.
Please note LCS will be closed on the 2nd day of AP testing which is May 5. Thus, the tests for AP Calculus, Human Geography, and German, which are all scheduled for May 5, will be given on the make up day, May 22, at the regular cost of $40.
Also, the Comparative Government test will be given on May 22 rather than May 14 as World History is scheduled for the same time slot. We do not have adequate space at Glass to test two groups of over 100 students at the same time. College Board recognizes this as a valid reason to use the make up day.
Please contact Mrs. Wise, AP Coordinator at wiselw@lcsedu.net or (434)515-5370, ext. 34003 if you have any questions.
