DYER ELEMENTARY

We are excited to announce that BASD and Burlington Coalition for Dismantling Racism (BCDR) have partnered again for the Black History Art and Essay Contest. The contest is open to all BASD students! Previous contests showcased our student’s thoughtfulness and their hopes and dreams for a racially just world. This year’s contest provides Burlington students another great opportunity for deeper reflection on Black history and the impact of race and diversity on our community and nation.

Participation in the contest is voluntary, but we hope you will encourage your students to engage, investigate, and use their creativity in this contest.

Theme for the 2023 Art and Essay Contest:
“I’m Me and I’m Magnificent: Turning our differences into superpowers”

How can students participate?

• Students can participate as individuals by submitting an art entry and/or an essay. There will not be the ability for small groups of students to submit any entries this year.
• There will be one prize awarded per grade level (gift cards).
• Three overarching winners will each receive a pair of airpods!

Full classroom participation is encouraged through a video format.

• The classroom that wins the contest by creatively focusing on the theme within a video will be given a class pizza party.

Important dates (timeline):

• The contest will begin on February 1 and run through February 22.
• Entries should be turned into each school’s main office by the end of the day February 22.
• The district office will collect all entries on February 23.
• BCDR will pick up all entries on February 24 with judging taking place on February 25.
• Winners will be announced shortly after!

All lost and found items will be donated to Love, Inc. next Friday. Stop in before or after school if you are missing any items!!

It's time to order your Dyer Elementary yearbook! The deadline to order your yearbook is Wednesday, February 8. Yearbooks cost $13.50 and will be distributed in late May.

Thank you to our awesome PTO for holding a successful Movie Matinee and Supply Drive!! Dyer Staff is very grateful to our Dyer families for their generosity!

Mrs. Trewyn-Way's class read, "The Jelly Donut Difference" for kindness week which focuses on Leah and Dexter, a brother and sister who don’t always get along, but eventually learn about kindness and generosity., We created our own jelly donuts and sprinkled them with kind words. We also wrote about how we can spread kindness.

This year, our families will soar to new heights with our Heart Hero Dragons! They will take our students on an AMAZING adventure around the globe to learn about heart and brain health, meet kids with special hearts, and raise funds for the health of all hearts. Our students will feel good by doing good, knowing they made a difference for kids just like them!

Reorganizing? Have gently used books that your kids have grown out of? Donate them to the Dyer Book Bash and help provide classrooms with needed books for students to use on a daily basis. Books appropriate for ages 3-12 would be appreciated. Please drop them off in the "Book Bash Box" in the main doors by the end of February.

There is no school for 4K on March 1st, as our 4K teachers will be engaged in screeners for incoming students.

Children who will be age 4 by September 1, 2023 may now enroll for full-day and half-day 4K in the Burlington Area School District. The enrollment process begins by creating an account for the new student in Skyward (link). Families will need to show proof of age (birth certificate) and proof of residency. 5K families - not currently enrolled in BASD 4K - may also enroll.
