October at John Haley
October, 2022
Message from Mrs. Bravo, Principal
It is hard to believe it is October already! Our teachers have been very busy creating and implementing amazing learning opportunities for all of our scholars! Our classrooms, learning commons, and hallways are buzzing with excitement, laughter, questioning, and motivation to explore and learn. A strong school-to-home partnership is incredibly important for the growth of your Bulldog(s). Also, teachers will be reaching out to families to schedule parent-teacher conferences during the month of October.
September was filled with several activities including All Pro Dads, selection of STUCO officers, Book Fair, and our First Family Night. Thanks to all who participated.
Please save the date for our Literacy Night on Thursday, October 27th at 5:00 pm. Weather permitting we will be in the blacktop and gym. Students will be allowed to come dressed to school as their favorite book character. Please follow the guidelines as listed below:
*Costumes are to reflex non-threatening figures (book characters)
*Weapons and blood are NOT permitted.
Home-School Communication:
Good communication between the school and home is very important to us and we are working to provide numerous ways for this good communication to take place. As you are likely aware by this point, we have been shifting as much as we can to digital communication. We encourage you to do the following to help us communicate with you well:
- We sent out an October Calendar through the app Snap! Connect. Your child will also receive a paper copy of this calendar from their teacher to bring home on Thursday folder.
- Watch for class newsletters/communication from your child's teacher.
- Please ensure we have an accurate email address that you check regularly and a phone number. If you are not receiving any emails or calls from us then it probably means we have incorrect information on our end.
- Please sign up for the digital tools that Irving ISD has provided. These include:
- Snap! Connect
- SchoolMessenger
- Home Access Center-
- Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@JHaleyBulldogs)
- Please visit our website at https://tx01917973.schoolwires.net/johnhaley
- Please feel free to email us or call us at 972-600-6600
Dyslexia Awareness Month
Having a child diagnosed with dyslexia can be a traumatic experience. While dyslexia can make reading more difficult, with the right instruction, almost all individuals with dyslexia can learn to read. Many people with dyslexia have gone on to accomplish great things. Among the many dyslexia success stories are Thomas Edison, Stephen Spielberg, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Charles Schwab.
Dyslexia is a neurological condition caused by a different wiring of the brain. There is no cure for dyslexia and individuals with this condition must learn coping strategies. Research indicates that dyslexia has no relationship to intelligence. Individuals with dyslexia are neither more nor less intelligent than the general population. But some say the way individuals with dyslexia think can actually be an asset in achieving success.

Capturing Kids' Hearts: A Closer Look at Self-Direct
What does it mean to Self-Direct?
Self-Direction is the ability and learned skill to cast a vision of future goals and then take intentional steps toward who, where, and what we want to be. Instead of focusing on things to control or avoid, we emphasize our responsibility to make positive choices related to our emotions, attitudes, and actions.
Why focus on Self-Direction?
- Self-direction strengthens relationships. Self-direction helps to grow social skills and develop meaningful, positive relationships with others.
- Self-direction teaches personal responsibility. Learning to self-direct teaches students to take responsibility for their own actions.
- Self-direction helps us to regulate emotions: Self-direction empowers students to regulate their impulses and emotional responses to situations and circumstances in their life.
Self-Direction in Action:
- Practice goal setting and action planning. When we establish goals and develop action plans, we learn to take intentional steps to successfully achieve goals.
- Monitor and adjust. Provide students with regular feedback and opportunities to self-assess progress toward goals to make adjustments and improvements in their behaviors.
- Reflect and evaluate. Facilitate discussions and reflection to prompt students to examine what they do, think, and say against their goals and vision for their life and learning.
