The Mustang Minute
Week of February 7th
FROM THE PRINCIPALS' OFFICES
Greetings Brookwood Families,
Life is BUSY these days at both BES and BMS! This past week, students in both buildings finished up their MAP and STAR testing. Spring pictures were also done in both buildings, and it was great to see all of those beautiful Mustang smiles! Lastly, we have several exciting upcoming events in the coming weeks! Monday, February 7th marks our 100th Day of School! Students and staff in both buildings are encouraged to dress like a 100 year old in celebration of this milestone! Be sure to read the rest of this issue of the Mustang Minute for detailed information on other exciting events happening soon!
Stay warm everyone!

Lake Geneva Badger Visits 8th Grade Class!
On Friday, our 8th graders then traveled to Badger High School for a guided tour of the facility. Accompanied by our 8th grade homeroom teachers, students were able to see firsthand the classrooms they will be learning in next year and ask questions about high school life.
Just a reminder that 8th graders are able to go onto the Badger website and register with their Badger PowerSchool account starting Feb. 4th - 18th!
We are so fortunate to have such wonderful partners at Badger to make our students' transition to high school a smooth one. Thank you Badger High School and Mrs. Obry for working together in support of our students' LEAP to high school!

What's Happening in Ms. Stanley's Class?
We're having fun with phonograms in Ms. Stanley's room! First graders are making phonogram books by adding sensory objects for letter sounds. Pictured here, they are gluing rice for the letter 'r'. The photos also show students busily engaged during word and sentence dictation.
Throughout word dictation students apply the phonics patterns they have learned to spell words. Sentence dictation gives the kids a chance to work together. First, they use sentence frames to build the sentence. Then they take turns spelling and writing words in the sentence. Finally, they write the sentence again on their own paper. This practice helps students apply phonics skills, learn trick words, and understand sentence structure.
What's Happening in Ms. Bullock's Personal Finance class?
Personal Finance is a new elective at Brookwood Middle School this semester. The class is filled with students who are interested in learning how to make better choices with their money. So far, they have determined their spending personality, and they are considering their financial goals.
The students learned that according to Dave Ramsey, "Personal finance is 80% behavior and 20% head knowledge." In addition to other things, students will conduct experiments to learn more about products and what trade-offs they are willing to make. Last week, the class did a blind taste test of toaster pastries: Pop Tarts at $3.09/box versus Millville at $1.49/box. The group overwhelmingly preferred the Pop Tarts brand. Knowing what their spending habits are and what factors are important to them when making purchases will help them to become better consumers and help them to manage their money.
In spite of the fact that most hope to be millionaires someday, the students were skeptical about their ability to actually make that happen. After looking at an investment comparison, they realized that if they are intentional about making a plan to start saving and investing early, it is an attainable goal. Expect big things from this group!

Promoting a Social-Emotional Focus at Home
This Month's Focus: Relationship Skills
Relationship Skills are the ability to interact positively and productively with other people. It is one of the most important social-emotional skills we teach. Whether it's making a friend, being part of a team, or working on an important project with others, relationship skills are essential to our success, productivity, and happiness. Like all social-emotional skills, relationship skills take practice, modeling, and guidance to develop.
Here are some quick simple opportunities to help your child build and bring awareness to this critical skill:
Compliment or congratulate somebody
Do something nice for somebody
Show appreciation of others
Greet a person in a polite way
Attract positive attention from peers
Express concern for another person
Attract positive attention from adults
Make a suggestion or request in a polite way
Offer to help somebody Respond to another person’s feelings
At home activity: Conflict Resolution Read-Along
Helping children resolve conflicts teaches them skills about relationships that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Fairy tale read-alongs can help your child understand how conflict works with others and gives you an opportunity to talk about other people's perspectives in a relationship. Choose a fairy tale to read it to your child, like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. As you read the story to your child, ask them the following questions:
- What is this story’s main conflict?
- What do the main characters want to happen?
- How can the characters work together to make everyone happy?
Then, ask about recent conflicts your child may have experienced. Have them share about times when, like the fairy tale characters, they felt conflict with another person. Ask them how they worked with that person to make the situation better.

Old News, but Good News!
Brrrr....it's cold out here!
Also - BMS parents of 4th and 5th graders: please feel free to drop off your child at the front doors on those extra cold days so that they don't need to walk all the way around to the 4/5 wing entrance.
Thank you!
