Canby High School Family Newsletter
For the Week of Sept 23rd to Sept 29th, 2021
Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
Fall is here, and the weather is changing. We welcome back the rain, football, and all the other aspects of Autumn in Oregon.
Our Fall sports programs are in full swing. Volleyball hosted a tournament last weekend, and performed well, only to be defeated in a tough final match. Fortunately, the team bounced back on Tuesday night with a strong victory against our league opponents, St Mary’s Academy. Great job ladies!
Our football team continues its strong performance with a decisive victory against North Salem High School last Saturday night. The rain didn’t dampen our spirit, and a strong student crowd enthusiastically urged our team on. (Thank you, students, for your spirit and following the COVID/mask protocols!)
Also in sports, junior boys soccer midfielder Sammy Barajas-Silva was announced as MaxPreps/United Soccer Coaches State Player of the Week for Oregon. The announcement is here and you can read about the article from Canby First here. Congratulations Sammy!
Next week, on Wednesday night between 6:00 and 8:00pm is our Back to School Night. Like last year, this will be virtual and provided through Zoom links. There will be a general session with overviews of academic programs and separate sessions to meet with our teaching staff. More information will be forwarded next week under a separate email.
Next month, we celebrate Homecoming. There are a lot of questions regarding what this high school tradition will look like this year with the current restrictions. Our students and staff are continuing to plan, and we hope to provide an experience that is both memorable and safe for all students. More information is coming.
Finally, and sadly, I want to address a TikTok activity called “Devious Licks.” Students around the country are posting videos of destruction and theft of school property as a way to gain popularity. This behavior has impacted many regional schools heavily, and has finally made its way to Canby. While students may think of this as a victimless crime, it has already cost CHS thousands of dollars in damage, in addition to multiple man hours of clean up.
At CHS, we believe our students to be responsible, and we want them to be empowered as they experience their high school journey. We also want them to understand they are part of a greater Canby community. This vandalism and criminal activity goes against our values as a school and hurts everyone. Parents, please speak to your students about this, and students, we appreciate your help as we work to end this damaging activity.
Have a great week and Go Cougars!

We’ve had a few changes to schedules, mainly at the lower levels. Please check the master schedule linked here for all the current game times and locations. If you think one of our teams had great performances, nominate them for OSAA team of the week! The link is here.
A reminder that masks are required indoors for everyone who is not in active competition or practice. For outdoor athletics, masks are required for everyone who cannot maintain 6ft of social distance. Those who are competing or practicing outdoors may also choose to remove their masks.
This year, we have again purchased a license to broadcast all our home games on the NFHS Network for free! Away games may still require a subscription to the NFHS Network. Please go to NFHSNetwork.com and create a free account to watch all our games in the stadium and main gym.
Other Information
Attendance and Sick Students
There are processes in place to help us track students in the event of illness or an early departure from school.
If a student is sick during class, they should go to the health room, located in the counseling office. Our staff will contact the family for pick up.
If a student needs to be excused for an appointment or any other reason, please notify our attendance office at 503.263.7210 as soon as possible. This allows us to notify the teacher and excuse the student in a timely manner.
