Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day is January 24th. This very rare syndrome affects 1 in 500,000 people so, it is likely you’ve never heard of it before today.
Our school has a student who was born with Moebius Syndrome which basically means some of their facial nerves are underdeveloped. Their face doesn’t have the full range of movement that yours or mine have. Smiling, frowning, squinting, speech clarity, and blinking are challenges.
The biggest challenge affecting individuals with Moebius Syndrome is perception. Because their faces are paralyzed.
To help spread awareness of Moebius Syndrome, we ask that all staff and students wear something purple on January 24th and spread the word to look beyond face value and to support our fellow classmate and friend.
Our next enriched learning day is Wednesday, January 25th. Students have been learning how to give back to the community. Some classes will be writing letters, some have a canned food drive, and some have a clothing food drive. If you are able to help Alameda with this, please bring any items that you would like to donate to the school. We appreciate your support in this. Students can answer any questions you have as towards what their classroom will be doing.
