Please note that in the mornings you and your student must be in line and unloaded by 8:03 am at door #13. The door will lock automatically at 8:03 am and you will then need to bring your student to the front office for drop off. Any students dropped off at the front office after 8:05 am are considered tardy and must be signed in by an adult.

My name is Ms. Paula Bell and I am very excited to be your new Dean at Eastridge Elementary School. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself.

I am originally from Lexington, Kentucky but, I lived in Bloomington, IN for many years. I attended Indiana University where I graduated with a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education. I have my Masters’ degree in Educational Leadership as well as a Building Level Administrator License from the University of Indianapolis.

Since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a teacher. I always knew that teaching was my passion. After High School, I joined the US Army as a Photographer and Videographer for four years. After serving in the US Army, I moved back home to Bloomington, IN to attend college at the IU School of Education. After receiving my teaching license, I became a teacher at Fairview Elementary School for Monroe County Community School Corporation in Bloomington, Indiana.

Recently, I was a first grade teacher and an Instructional Coach at Skiles Test Elementary School in Lawrence Township. I have three adopted children and three cats. On my time off, I love spending time with my family! I am looking forward to working with the Eastridge community in 2020. I am ready to soar with the Rockets!

Haley Quade (district dietitian) and Chef Chris Polo stopped by Eastridge on Wednesday, February 5th for a Discovery Kitchen sampling event. During the visit students sampled a healthy snack called Power Up Energy Sunbutter Bites. Recipe can be found below.

Young Actors Theatre is excited to bring back one of our old performances for a special run! In honor of the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, YAT is partnering with Girls Inc. to present "GirlCon," a series of school performances aimed at middle and high school students. Auditions are open to current 8th-11th grade students. Previous acting experience is not necessary, but a deep commitment is! Check out the rehearsal schedule here.

We will be having auditions for the project on Monday, February 10th from 6:30-8pm at the Athenaeum (401 E Michigan St) Auditions are open to any 8th-11th graders. Please do not allow your children to bring their toys, sports equipment or precious items to school to avoid any loss or damage and upset. The school will not take responsibility for loss or damage of personal items.

We believe that recess is an important for students both socially and physically, however there may be times where students are not feeling well. If a parent requests their child to remain indoors, they can write a letter with that request for up to 2 days. If it is longer than 2 days, a note from a doctor would be required to keep the student indoors for recess. Occasionally, Indiana weather conditions require outdoor recess to be canceled. When temperature or heat index is above 90 students will not participate in any outdoor activities. In addition, when temperatures and/or wind chills are below 20 students do not have any outdoor activities.

Why attendance matters?

Fact: Missing just 2 days a month means a child misses 10% of the school year.

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT ATTENDANCE IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.

Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. Every school day counts in a child's academic life...A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. The effects of lost school days build up one absence at a time on individual students. Please ensure that your child understands the importance of good school attendance and is at school every day. Every day matters! Every day provides important learning opportunities! Set your child up for success by developing these good habits now!

MSD of Warren Township Attendance Policy Reminder

Students with 7 or more absences will provide a doctor's excusal for each absence. Parents should send medical excusals to the classroom teachers when the student returns to school. Medical excusals will be counted as excused absences. Our goal is to ensure that your child's attendance is accurate.

3rd Graders will take the IREAD-3 Assessment during the week of March 16 - 20. This is a critical statewide standardized assessment. The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) assessment measures foundational reading standards to Grade 3 students each spring. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with House Enrolled Act 1367 (also known as Public Law 109 in 2010). 3rd and 4th Graders will take the statewide assessment called ILEARN. The ILearn testing window opens on Monday, April 20. ILEARN measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana Academic Standards. ILEARN is the summative accountability assessment for Indiana students and assesses the areas of Language Arts and Math. In an effort to make sure our students and staff understand and know what to do in the case of emergencies, we plan practice drills throughout the school year. Some of these drills include procedures we practice monthly, like fire drills, and some we practice only a few times during the year, like wind/tornado drills.

We wanted you to be aware of the types of drills that we practice together in the event of a school safety concern so that you can talk with your students about these situations if they should come home with questions.

• Fire Drills – Students and staff evacuate their classrooms and exit the building. All classrooms report to a designated location outside of the school building. During these drills, cars entering campus will be stopped by staff until our perimeter is clear of students and staff.

• Wind/Tornado Drills – Students and staff report to designated locations in the building away from large windows and doors with windows. During this drill, our exterior doors will be locked so that all office staff can participate as well.

• Lockdown Drills – Our buildings are secured internally and externally. Students remain with staff and wait for directions. During these drills, if you visit campus, you may see law enforcement agencies like Warren Police, parked on our campus supporting this practice.

• Bus Evacuation Drills – Students practice exiting the bus using emergency exits upon arriving to school. During these drills, cars entering campus will be stopped by staff until our perimeter is clear of students and staff.

It is important to note that your student’s focus and cooperation during our drills is paramount. When drills are conducted, all individuals on our campus must participate, and that number can be upwards of 500 people. Paying attention, being alert and following directions allows for the best learning experience during the drills. Please reinforce this at home. Also, please know that if you are in the building when these drills are being practiced, you will be asked to practice with our school.

I appreciate your support and ask that you reach out with any questions.

The occasion may arise when the school district wants to recognize your child or your child's school. This may include your child's photo, your child's name or your child's work in district publications, newsletters, on school district websites, and in electronic/ social media or in staff training videos. We may also want to tell the media (including newspapers, television, and radio) about your child's achievements. We never knowingly release information about a student to anyone who wants to use it for commercial/ political purposes. However, we will honor your request to not include your child in these types of recognitions if you notify your child's school office in writing that you do not want this type of information released.

Please keep your child at home if he/she has a fever of 100 or higher. Do not give your child Tylenol to get the fever down and send to school. Students must be fever free for 24 hours without taking medication before returning to school.

Healthy Smiles will visit Eastridge on Thursday February 13th. Please make sure you return the student Healthy Smiles paper by Thursday morning if you want your child to receive a cleaning.

The Marion County Health Dept will be coming to Eastridge to test for vision and hearing. First and third graders will be screened for vision, first and fourth graders will be screened for hearing. This event will take place February 24-27 at Eastridge. This is a free screening for the students. Thank you.

There is a continuous Lost & Found table set up in the cafeteria. All clothing items and lunch boxes left outside during recess are sent to the table. Please encourage your child to check the table for their items during lunch. Lost jewelry, glasses and other miscellaneous items will be in the office. Identify them and they are yours again!

Some other future events that are in the works for this spring semester include, a 'Cookies N' Canvas' event in March, Spring Fling in April, Teacher Appreciation week in May. If you would like to volunteer with any of these events, we invite you to come to our February 25th PTA meeting.

As always, our school collects Box Tops. You can still find traditional clipped box tops on select items in stores or use the new Box Top For Education app from your phone. Simply take a picture of your receipt and box tops are automatically added!

Lastly, did you know the Census is this year? Did you know young children are the most unaccounted for population? When counting please make sure to count children and adults where they sleep at night. The Census is vital to our schools as it helps to determine how much federal money our school will receive.
