Screening, Q&A with director Jerónimo Rodríguez, and Reception
In The Monument Hunter, Jorge, a Chilean filmmaker living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, watches a film and thinks he recognizes in it a statue of Portuguese neurosurgeon Egas Moniz he and his father may have seen years before in a plaza in his native Santiago. Obsessed with the possible connection, he goes off on a search that playfully jumps among the plazas, statues, sounds, and images associated with one another in Jorge’s mind. Combining essay film, travelogue, and film noirish voice-over narration, the film explores the nature of memory and the totemic images that form it.
Organized by New York University and Fordham University, Encrucijadas/Encruzilhadas is a biannual symposium that gathers scholars, curators, filmmakers, and graduate students working on Latin American cinema in the New York area. With screenings, curatorships, academic panels, and roundtables with programmers and filmmakers, the symposium is an opportunity to share research and information, engage in collaborative efforts among institutions, and encourage an open discussion on critical topics and issues in Latin American cinema. Previous versions of the symposium took place in 2013 and 2015. This screening of The Monument Hunter (2015) is an opportunity for professors, students, programmers, and makers of Latin American cinema gathering in NYC for LASA, to touch base in anticipation of the next Encrucijadas/Encruzilhadas symposium, scheduled for February 2017.
