The Weekly Buzz 🐝
From Palmer River Elementary School
October 13, 2023
Every year, district students in grades K-4 are assessed three times using screening tools in the areas of literacy and mathematics to monitor student progress towards meeting grade level benchmarks, and the state learning standards. These assessments also help teachers inform their instruction and determine areas of focus for students. At this point in the school year, teachers have finished up their beginning of the year assessments, and have started to identify students who would benefit from targeted interventions and enrichment. In the past the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has called this data driven process Response to Intervention (RtI), and more recently, when schools incorporate the needs of the whole child and their social emotional and behavioral needs, it is called MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support).
Last year we instituted a grade level common intervention and enrichment block (CIB) for thirty minutes each day. During these common grade level blocks, we will use an “all hands on deck” approach to support ALL of our students. By dedicating this time in our master schedule to intervention and enrichment in core academic content, we ensure that all students are supported consistently, in smaller instructional groups, and at their “just right” level. Teachers are provided with an opportunity to specialize in areas that they are most effective, which allows students to access higher-quality instruction.
In an effort to truly focus on student needs, reading specialists, general and special education teachers, and paraprofessionals are collaborating to identify, support, and instruct students in academic priority areas as identified by our assessments. Our goal is to assist students in acquiring skills and move beyond their current level of performance.
Students will be grouped according to their specific needs during the CIB block. Some students may work with a different teacher other than their homeroom teacher during this time, and the staff member supporting your child may change during the course of the school year, too. The goal is to be responsive in meeting students needs, continuously monitor progress, and change the instructional focus as needed.
If your child should require more support than the common intervention block allows, your child’s classroom teacher will be in touch with you to discuss other necessary interventions as indicated. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us anytime. We are happy to help.
Sincerely,
Kristine Kefor, Principal & Dr. Cheryl Leandro, Assistant Principal

Speed Limit on Our School Campus
In an effort to be safe, it is important that families are respecting the speed limit while driving around our the school campuses. The posted speed limit on our school campus is 15 mph. There have been several reports that cars are traveling at speeds faster than the speed limit, especially during morning drop off. Please help us keep everyone safe, and respect the speed limit.
Yield to School Buses
Additionally, while driving around the school campuses of Beckwith Middle School and Palmer River Elementary School, be sure to yield to school buses. This becomes of particular importance when a bus is entering or exiting traffic. Thank you.

The Hungry Candy Monster has Arrived at PRES!
Several parents have asked if they can donate candy to our upcoming Trunk or Treat. To help us collect candy this year, we have a VERY HUNGRY candy monster in the hallway at Palmer River that students can feed. If you'd like to help our amazing trunkers, please send in an unopened bag of halloween candy with your student so they can feed it to the monster next week.
Trunkers Wanted!
Trunk or Treat Volunteers
We still need a few more parents to help us with hayrides, games, registration and serving concessions at Trunk or Treat! We can't make this event happen unless we have more help, so please consider covering a shift and thank you in advance! Click HERE to sign up to help!
