Curriculum Focus:
Year 7:
This term, year 7 will discover unit Algebra and develop their skills to use and interpret algebraic notations, collect like terms and substitute into algebraic expressions. Students will have a chance to mastering their knowledge about inverse operations by using the different function machines and solve equations by applying the brick wall method and others. In addition to this, our lessons will guide students in developing their vocabulary as they explore Algebra first time and they will apply their skill in solving problems in different context.
Questions:
1. What does word “term” mean in maths?
2. What is a difference between terms, expressions, and equations?
3. How do you substitute in Maths?
Year 8:
This term, Year 8 students will be exploring unit Algebra in depth and develop their skills in expanding single and double brackets and simplify their answers. Their knowledge will stretch by factorising linear expressions into one bracket and double brackets in advanced sets. Lessons will be encouraged students to develop their proficiency in solving equations with x’s on both sides and connect their knowledge to by plotting a graph from a table of values and find the gradient of a straight line.
Questions:
1. What is a difference about expanding and factorising?
2. What is a Cartesian Graph?
3. What is a gradient of a straight line?
Year 9:
This term, Year 9 students will be mastering their knowledge in unit Algebra. In addition, to Year 7 and 8 knowledge students will stretch their knowledge about representing, solving inequalities on number lines, plot them and shade a region. Students will explore the connections between expanding and factoring expressions, solving linear and quadratics equations, and plotting them on Cartesian graphs. Further to it they will need to label the roots, intercept and turning point of a quadratic graph, solve simultaneous equations by elimination and graphically and apply their algebraic skills to change the subject of a formula.
Questions:
1. What does “simultaneous equations” mean?
2. What is turning point of a quadratic graphs?
3. How can you find a root of quadratic equations?
Celebration Evening:
The evening was a great success and below are pictured a selection of the students with their awards.
Year 10 students Cullen and James also performed during the evening, Cullen on the piano and James on his guitar.
Thank you to all the parents/carers and students who attended, it was lovely to see you all and celebrate these successes with you.
