Makerspace in the Library
and why we should have one
Benefits of Makerspaces
A hot debate in library circles today is whether or not to implement makerspaces into the library setting. While there are many of those who are opposed for one reason or another, there are just as many who advocate for its use in the library setting. With technology being readily available to a large percentage of the student population, either at home or throughout the school day, the library is presented with a unique opportunity to take those devices and enhance the lessons and activities. Ediaz (2017) states providing the use of what is considered makerspace materials “is only the latest manifestation of the library’s natural role in encouraging and facilitating the creativity and ingenuity of its community of users.” It is our responsibility to ensure we are doing everything in our power to keep kids engaged, current with the times, and the feeling of a library someplace they want to continue to visit throughout their lifetime. Libraries are moving away from being a quick place to run in and grab a book toward becoming a future-ready space where students are introduced to problem-solving and critical thinking skills outside of a traditional classroom setting. “It’s about creating a space that encourages students to dream and wonder and design” (Spencer, 2018).
