ELA
We began our Skills 3 unit this week:
In Unit 3, students will begin to make connections between sounds and symbols. They will continue to practice blending sounds into words and they will be taught several of the symbols used when reading and writing. Specifically, they will learn the most common way to spell eight of the sounds of English
Skills: This week we learned the following sounds: /m/, /a/ & /t/. We practiced listening for words that begin with those letters, as well as orally blending words that begin with those sounds. After learning the three sounds, we began to practice a new skill called chaining. With this skill, students look at the letter in a cvc word, or vc word, say the sounds, then blend the sounds to make a word. So they began reading!!!!
The chain that we practiced was "mat" --> "at --> mat --> at
Knowledge: This week we learned about the sense of taste. Students learned that taste buds are on the tongue and help us taste sweet, sour, bitter & salty foods (see photo below). They also learned that the sense of smell helps us to taste foods. Vocabulary words that were introduced were: congested, flavorful, pucker, saliva & taste buds. We also tasted lemons for sour, pretzels for salty, and marshmallows for sweet. We did not taste bitter...they know that coffee has a bitter taste.
We also learned about the sense of touch and how this sense protects us. The picture above taught them what/where the nerves are in our bodies, and how they send messages to the brain.
Vocabulary words that were introduced were: nerves, sensitive, skin & texture.
Math
In math this week we continued to use a number rack to practice showing numbers from 1-5 and also numbers through 10. We also practiced using popsicle sticks as "tally marks" and students practiced representing various numerals from 1 -10 with their popsicle sticks. See the pictures below showing students making their popsicle stick tallies.
Finally, we learned a new game called Which Bug Will Win?. In this game students spin a spinner and practice recording the data from their spins in a graph. You can see the digital version of the game by clicking on the button below.
Science
This week we began our next scope in science which deals with weather patterns. We learned about thermometers and that they measure temperature. Students also began to record daily weather on a "weather caterpillar" so we can see if any patterns develop over the next several days.
