Learning Outcomes: Reading Comprehension, Genres and Text Structures, Listening and Speaking, Print and Alphabet Knowledge, Emotional and Behavioral Self-Regulation
Let your child show off what she already knows about books! During your next story time, pretend to read the "wrong way" and let your child correct you. Hold the book upside down, begin on the last page, say the wrong character's name, etc.
Why It's Important
Knowing the parts of a book like the front and back cover, the title, and that the print on the page has meaning are important steps in getting ready to read.
Not Ready Yet
Go through a book together, looking at the pictures. If the book has a lot of pictures of dogs, you might say, "This book seems to be about cats. Is that what it is about?" Let the child correct you!
Need a Challenge
An older child might be starting to read and recognize familiar words, especially names. Try reading one of these familiar words incorrectly, and let the child find the correct word on the page.
