Veteran's Day Assembly
On Friday, November 11, 2022, the 8th grade class participated in a variety of activities centered around the observance of Veterans' Day. Students watched and reflected on Taking Chance, a screen adaptation of the real-life experiences of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, who served as an escort for PFC Chance Phelps, a Marine who was killed in action in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. Following this, students listened to three veterans, each from three different campaigns as they shared their unique military experiences, stories, photos and videos. We are grateful to Mr. Ira Whipple, Mr. Mike Spencer, and Mr. Nick Mantych, not only for engaging with our students but also for their service. Students also had the opportunity to ask follow up questions of each presenter. In the afternoon, the 8th grade class walked down to Memorial Park in Richmond to place a wreath on behalf of the entire school. This wreath was constructed with red, white, and blue ribbons on which the entire staff and students had written messages of appreciation. During this ceremony, several students participated in various roles, including the playing of "Taps", leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, and presenting the wreath at the memorial. These activities brought many opportunities for students and staff to learn more about many aspects of military service and to deepen our appreciation for all, past and present, who have chosen to serve our country.
