Our Founding Order - The Dominican Sisters
History of Dominican Sisters
In the mid 1830's, an Italian Dominican missionary came to know the people and their needs. Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli was sent from his work in northern Wisconsin and Michigan to the Mississippi Valley to establish parishes and build churches. In 1844, Fr. Mazzuchelli purchased the Mound property from General George Wallace Jones. In 1847, Fr. Mazzuchelli gathered the first young women, daughters of Irish leadminers and farmers, to become the community of Dominican Sisters at Sinsinawa.
In 1907, five determined Sinsinawa Dominican nuns from the St. Clara Academy at The Mound came to Omaha to be the first faculty of St. Cecilia Cathedral Grade School. That first year, there were only enough students and nuns for four classrooms: Sr. M. Dionysius Hurley (1st and 2nd Grades), Sr. M. Donata Wohl (3rd & 4th Grades), Sr. M. Olivia Moran (5th & 6th Grades), Sr. M. Cecilia Renn (7th & 8th Grades), and Sr. M. Celeste Hurley (music).
