The Creation of Eye Glasses
By Kayla Hildreth
The first Eye Glasses
The first eye glasses were thought to be made by Salvino D'Armate when he was messing around with light refraction and accidentally blinded himself. While examining light refraction he realized that by using 2 pieces of glass instead of one it magnified the object being seen.
It Happened Around 1285
Sometime around 1285 was when his first pair of eyeglasses were acknowledged. There was a pair for nearsighted people and farsighted people and was situated on the bridge of the nose like modern day glasses so that people could use their hands while being able to see.
Ben franklin is responsible for creating the bi-focal glasses, which adjusted vision for reading or distance
How did it help?
The invention helped people of the Renaissance be able to multi-task while also being able to see. The first reading stone was to be held up to your eye while you were doing something which didn't allow you to use both your hands which was difficult for merchants, builders, and people of the everyday life that worked. The creation of the Eyeglasses reduced restriction with the hands and gave them limited freedom to do more things.
Changes through the Years
Throughout the first creation of the eye glasses we've come a long ways, a gem to watch games through during the roman ages, Salvino D'Armate's balancing glasses, Ben Franklin creating the first bifocals that adjusted between distance and reading, Acrylic glasses in the 50s and 60s, and transition lens of the modern day. Each pair of glasses were made to help the person see better, work better, and be happier while easing their lives, no matter what the day of age the glasses have been helping the world.
