BRMS Families,
Happy New Year and welcome back. I hope each of you had a restful and meaningful time with your family and friends during the winter break.
This month our Capturing Kids Hearts word is Respect. During our family time we will be discussing what respect looks and sounds like to other people. For example, how does respect look at home, school, or out in our community? We will also talk about respecting ourselves as well and the good within ourselves.
It was great to welcome students back and see their smiling faces this week.
Sincerely,
Angel Perez

Counselor’s Corner
Welcome back!! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break! As we start the second semester there are many things to think about. We have made it halfway through the school year. Congratulations!! I can’t believe how fast that has gone! As we start this semester, we will be starting to look at course selections for the 2024-2025 school year. When the new course selection catalog is available, please look over with your student. I will be meeting with students to go over courses mid-January and will meet with current 7th grade students during History class on January 18. I will meet with current 6th graders on January 22 and 23 during their Tech App class. After those meetings, your student will come home with a course selection sheet for you to go over with them and return. We will need those forms back by Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
Note from the Nurse
Start your New Year off right
1. Maintain adequate sleep- Teens need about 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Sleep quality is directly associated with behavior, eating habits and the ability to fight off infections.
2. Wash hands frequently to reduce spread of germs- only 30% of teens age 13-18 appropriately wash their hands. Avoid touching eyes and mouth throughout the day. Do not share food, water bottles, or cosmetic items with others, as this is a common way of passing illnesses and infections on to your friends.
3. Practice healthy eating habits- Promote your child's health with a nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with adequate hydration throughout the day. Healthy eating includes various aspects, such as making the choice to eat sufficient nutrient-rich food, drinking plenty of water during the day, eating timely and regularly, and not eating in a hurry. A body fueled with healthy food will help your teen stay energetic, focused, and calm.
4. Help your child deal with stress and anxiety- Homework, tests, social pressures—kids can face a lot of stressful situations every day. Research shows that stress and anxiety can have a negative impact on kids' health, just like it can on the health of adults. Parents need to know how to spot symptoms of stress and find ways to manage children's anxiety.
5. Recognize and avoid destructive, unhealthy friendships and relationships- Just as important as making good friends is recognizing unhealthy or abusive friendships and partnerships. These types of relationships can be very damaging to you mentally, emotionally, and physically.
6. Live an active lifestyle- Reduce your screen time. Engage in physical activity whether it be participating in sports, solo exercise or a walk with friends. Get moving.
7. Set a goal- Set a goal whether big or small and work towards accomplishing that goal. Whether it be to make a better grade in English, save up money for something you have really been wanting or learning something new. Set your goal, write it down, make a plan and take action.
