Join Us For A Special Black History Month Event
Ifé Franklin will bring her Indigo Project to Revere this month
Ifé Franklin’s Indigo Project infuses multiple art practices to honor the lives, histories, cultures, and traditions of African people throughout the diaspora, with a concentration on the formerly enslaved of North America.
Revere Public Schools Assistant Superintendent of Equity and Inclusion Dr. Lourenço Garcia is proud to welcome Ifé, a local artist and filmmaker, to RPS to close out the schools’ month-long celebration of Black History Month.
On Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., RPS will host a special Black History Month event with Ifé at Revere High School’s Learning Common and celebrate this year’s Black History Month theme, African Americans and the Arts.
“Honoring Black History Month provides an opportunity for Blacks/Afro-Americans and their descendants to reconnect with and learn from their ancestral roots, reclaim their identity and dignity, act affirmatively to combat racial and ethnic exclusion, and move toward the future with a renewed sense of purpose and hope,” said Dr. Garcia.
Revere Public Schools Launches Black History Month Resource Page
February is Black History Month. This month allows educators to take a step back and reflect on whether their curriculum and instruction includes enough diverse voices and perspectives for students to learn about Black people who have shaped our nation and world.
Carter Woodson, the "Father of Black History," once stated, "We should emphasize not Negro History, but the Negro in history. What we need is not a history of selected races or nations, but the history of the world void of national bias, race hate, and religious prejudice."
RPS, RevereTV partner for Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, Revere High School students, elected officials, school committee members and members of the Human Rights Commission offered insight into the life and words of Dr. King on RevereTV. The program was streamed live on RevereTV’s YouTube channel, Revere Public Schools' (RPS) YouTube channel, as well as Revere Cable Access Channel Sunday evening.
Revere Public Schools’ Office of Equity and Inclusion, RPS’s Tech Dept., and the Communication Dept. produced an hour-long show in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Day in conjunction with Revere TV.
The format of this show included a roundtable discussion with RHS students, moderated by Assistant Superintendent of Equity and Inclusion Dr. Lourenço Garcia. These students discussed Dr. King’s famed “I Have a Dream” speech and how his words still resonate today.

Council Votes Wonderland As Site for New High School

On Monday night, the City Council voted 10-1 to approve the latest Revere High School Building Committee recommendation to submit a plan to build a new Revere High School at Wonderland. That option will now be headed to the Massachusetts School Building Authority this month.
This will not be the last vote on the project, as it is likely the council will vote on the funding agreement and debt authorization for the project some time in June. That vote will need a two-thirds majority for the project to move forward.
RHS Students Learning About Interpretation and Translation With Help From UMass
Students from The Foundations of Translation, Interpreting, and Language class at RHS
It’s a cutting-edge program that is the first of its kind in Massachusetts and, perhaps, the nation.
Through a new partnership with the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Revere High School students are taking a course in interpretation and translation that may spark interest and lead to careers in the field.
“We're doing something cutting-edge with the students,” said Regina Galasso, Associate Professor and Director of the Translation Center at UMass Amherst. “If the students are committed, it will distinguish them in their understanding of language and how to look at it and how to use it.”
The Foundations of Translation, Interpreting, and Language class at RHS will position students on a pathway to unique careers in translation and interpreting while learning to embrace their background and culture.
Revere Public Schools Mourns the Loss of Janeen Guiliano-Miranda

Friends, colleagues, and fellow educators of Janeen Guiliano-Miranda offer their reflections on the beloved long-time Revere Public School teacher. Janeen, 48, passed away this week after a courageous battle with cancer.
"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I pass along the news that our dear friend and colleague, Janeen Guiliano-Miranda, passed away. Janeen was a dedicated teacher at the McKinley/Hill Elementary schools, an elementary C2C coach, and a dear friend to so many in our RPS community. With her feisty and passionate personality, Janeen’s colleagues often quickly became some of her dearest friends. Those who worked with Janeen describe her as an incredibly hard worker, someone dedicated to providing the very best education, support, and care for her students for nearly two decades."
