A Message from Superintendent Zilliox
Dear Fredonia School Community,
I hope this message finds you well and that you are enjoying the start of our Spring Break. As you know, each year at this time, our district engages in a process to build a school budget for next school year. The creation of each budget brings its own particular set of challenges, with this year being no different. Currently, these factors include:
The New York State budget, which contains money for PK-12 education through aid, is late as we are past the April 1 deadline. An extension was approved which makes the new deadline April 10. Real and accurate numbers for state aid would be extremely helpful to the district in finalizing our budget, which the delay at the state level is preventing.
Due to inflation, several expenses have increased over the past year which include transportation, utilities, special education, occupational education, medical and prescription drug premiums, alternative education programs, and NYS teachers’ retirement rates.
The use of monies from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) and/or American Rescue Plan (ARP) are limited to address issues related to the ongoing pandemic and fund recovery efforts. Although they are appreciated, this funding cannot be used outside of these parameters.
However, the district continues to take this part of our work seriously and we see it as one of our most important tasks. Again, I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the key considerations within our approach as we build a budget. They include the following:
Using a collaborative process that involves faculty and staff at the building level, our administrative team, district office, and our Board of Education.
Allowing individuals an opportunity for their voice to be heard and taking feedback into account.
Ensuring that our budget aligns with our mission, vision, and core beliefs.
Continuing to utilize our budget to support our high quality instructional programs.
Offering innovative, dynamic, and global learning experiences for our students and adults.
Maximizing the resources that we have available and being creative in our thinking.
Keeping in mind the cost to our taxpayers and continuing to provide a high quality education at a reasonable price.
As we approach our budget adoption date, we continue to adjust and adapt to address our needs as a district. We look forward to presenting a finalized budget to our taxpayers for approval on May 16 at the Annual Budget Vote. We appreciate that our community has been very supportive of our school district in past years. Thanks in advance for your consideration.
Respectfully,
Brad Zilliox
Fredonia Feature with Ms. Christina DeGroff
For our next Fredonia Feature, we are highlighting our very own Ms. Christina DeGroff!
Ms. DeGroff teaches First Grade and is a newer addition to our Fredonia Family; we are so thankful to have her. She teaches the foundations of our core subjects, such as math and writing. It’s a difficult transition from Kindergarten to First Grade, and she strives to make a welcoming and uplifting environment for her students.
We got the chance to sit down with Ms. DeGroff and ask her about her job as a first grade teacher, as well as about some of the people in her life who she finds inspirational.
What would your students be surprised to know about you?
I stop working. They think I work 24/7. So looking through the eyes of a 6 and 7 year old, all they think I do is just print papers and read and teach. But I think they’d be surprised to find out I don’t teach all the time. They’re very intrigued about my personal life; they always ask what I do when I go home. I have a dog, so they always ask me about my dog. They know a lot about me personally because of pictures, and I do like to connect with them.
What is your favorite thing about being a first grade teacher at FCSD?
I applied specifically here because I wasn’t having the experience I wanted out of the school I was at. Whether it was building relationships with colleagues, or even just my own personal experience. I’ve had nothing but fond and great memories here. I’ve been blessed with the best group of kids both years, and I really like the people here, like the staff. But I just really like that I found a group of colleagues and teachers that I can call on—professional friends and personal friends. And it’s been very supportive on the administration side. I’ve been thrown curveballs in my two years of being here, and definitely the support here is something I haven’t experienced in other districts. I’m very happy here.
Why did you want to be a teacher?
My parents were both teachers. They’re retired now. My parents just came from a background of what you work is what you get. So, my mom worked in real estate, she worked as a secretary, [then they were] music educators. My sister teaches high school, and I found myself landing here. I’ve always gravitated towards teaching. Like as a little kid, in first grade when you’re asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I’ve said teacher; it’s been on all of my documents, so I just have always wanted to be it. I know it’s definitely been difficult—the climate and what you see socially with a ton of teachers leaving the profession and getting burnout. Do I feel it sometimes? Yeah. But I can’t picture myself doing anything else. I’m definitely intrigued, regardless if that’s in ten years or in two years, doing something else within the realm of teaching. But right now, I’m very happy.
What adjectives would you use to describe your presence in the classroom?
I’m going to say calming or cozy. I’m a huge proponent of understanding the fact that I have these 15 kids for more of the day than their parents. So [I’m] trying as best as I can to make it feel as inviting and comfortable, but also an environment that they know that they still are expected to come here and learn and to work. These kids definitely go in from that transition of kindergarten to first grade as a shock, which I understand that being in this position, but also these kids have to know, too, there is rigor, there are expectations, but coming in here, I’m expecting them to do it. But I want them to have fun; they’re still kids!
What is a funny or embarrassing moment that happened while teaching if you’re comfortable to share?
My kid told me I had a zit; it actually was kind of embarrassing for me. Kids obviously don’t have a filter at this age, and they come from a place that’s very pure and honest, and they didn’t mean it maliciously. But he’s like “what is that on your face? That’s huge. It’s red, and it looks like it hurts.” And I go, “it’s a zit. It’s a huge pimple.” And he goes, “why don’t you touch it?” And I go, “do you want me to touch it?” And then all the kids started laughing at me. But it was also very comical; they’re my biggest hype people ever. So, like they’ll tell me I’m pretty one day and the most beautiful person in the world, and the next day they’ll be like, “it looks like you got no sleep.” They keep me self aware, but at least they’re cute!
Who is the most influential woman in your life?
My mother. I know that’s the most stereotypical answer, but when I was little I used to jokingly say Oprah Winfrey—don’t know much about her. And then, obviously as any male or female matures they realize who has made the most impact on their life … My mother, I mean she helps me every single day. Whether it’s cutting out something for my class or helping me write a check. I mean, she really led me to this position as it was. I wouldn’t be anywhere without her.
If you could have dinner with three inspirational women, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
Barbara Walters. She was one of the most brilliant newscasters. And she’s interviewed so many. I mean, the news stories she’s covered and what she’s done with her career is fascinating.
Ellen DeGeneres would be great to meet. Love her show. Again because she’s so involved in pop culture and has interviewed like every single person, so that would be so fascinating to just hear how every celebrity interaction is.
Remember Ricky Tournament Gets Surprise Guest
On Sunday, March 19, the Remember Ricky Tournament was held at Lucky Lanes to honor Ricky Burgstrom, who passed away in November of 2021. Over 200 people came out to show their support ... including world-renowned bowler Jason Belmonte.
Belmonte was someone that Ricky idolized in the sport, so it was amazing he was able to be in attendance, and autograph the bowling ball that Ricky wanted!
It truly is a beautiful story of FCSD graduates, and teacher, honoring a classmate that passed away.
A Great First Week of Unified Basketball
Our Unified Basketball Team had a great first week of practice! They worked on shooting baskets, making passes, playing defense, and much more. Here's to a great season!
Mismatched Socks for World Down Syndrome Day
Mrs. Haase and Mrs. Beach's third graders learned about Down Syndrome for World Down Syndrome Day. Students raised money and wore mismatch socks to support Gigi's Playhouse.
Second Graders Hunt for Treasure in the Library ... Books!
Second graders in Mrs. Heitz's library class have been looking for treasures in the library ... books! Students are exploring popular non-fiction and finding early chapter books, just right for second graders. Using library treasure maps, they have found tons of gems this week!
Behind the Scenes of Crazy For You
Our High School Musical, CRAZY FOR YOU, was a huge success! Thanks to Ryan Davis for putting together this awesome recap of the many dedicated hours of work and play that go into making a musical production.
On Thursday, March 16, our fourth graders got to go behind the scenes of the musical. They explored props and learned how everything comes together to put on a show. They also learned how they can be a part of the middle school musical as fifth graders!
Kids Get Fit Club Teaches Healthy Habits Early
Ms. Bonnie Burnett and Mrs. Laura Haase run Kids Get Fit club in the Elementary.
Each class looks a little different but with the same goal. Students in grades 1-4 learn how to move their bodies fluently and efficiently to increase fitness levels. Students are exposed to age appropriate types of exercises, workouts, games, and activities. So much fun!
Learning About Black History
Some of our third graders learned about Black history recently by creating informational sheets and booklets about a famous or influential Black figure. This was a great way to learn about Black history themselves and have the opportunity to share their findings with their friends.
Serena Williams, LeBron James, and Michelle Obama are only a few of the stories shared and displayed.
Mrs. Brisky Moving to Wheelock
Good luck Peg! Our long time front desk secretary at FES is moving to Wheelock. Our second graders gifted Mrs. Brisky a heartfelt farewell! Thank you for your years of warm welcomes and dedication to our kids. You are loved and will be sadly missed by all. Best of luck to you at Wheelock!
Women in Business Field Trip
Some of our high school students attended a Women in Business field trip at Penn State Behrend. This was a great opportunity for our students … especially during Women's History Month!
They learned about careers and majors in Accounting, Management Information Systems, Finance, and Project and Supply Chain Management. They also heard from a student panel which included a former FHS student, Hannah Christy. The students toured the campus and had lunch in Dobbins Dining Hall. Thank you to our chaperones Lori Addington, Lisa Reinhardt, and Laura Depue.
Second Graders Learn About Ramadan
Students in Mr. Cybulski's second grade classroom recently learned about Ramadan.
We would like to thank Mohib and his family for teaching us about this special Muslim holiday!
Reading with a Furry Friend
Our therapy dog Millie has been a great addition to our elementary school. She was even willing to be a lap desk for these young readers!
