PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Welcome back to the school! This year we are excited to share the new ROARS theme to guide our behavior expectations. We have new posters and stickers to share with everyone. On the first day of school we held an assembly to review ROARS with all students.
Next week is "Safety Week". We will conduct a lockdown drill, weather drill, and fire drill during the week. Essentially, these are "inside drills" and "outside drills". For the lock down drill and severe weather drill, we will share with students that there are times when it is safer to be inside the classroom, so we will practice remaining in place. For fire drills, it is safer to be outside the school, so we practice this too.
Overall, we have some important updates for you, so please take a moment to review the many events and activities happening within the first few weeks of school.
Dr. Dwyer, Principal

Lockdown Drill Monday
Dear Roosevelt Parents/Guardians:
District 64 continues to provide a safe environment for all students, staff and community members. As required by the Illinois School Safety Drill Act (105 ILCS 128/20), during each academic year, schools must conduct a law enforcement lockdown drill to address a school shooting incident. This drill shall be no later than 90 days after the first day of each school year, that addresses an active threat or an active shooter within a school building.
Law enforcement lockdown drills must be conducted on days and times when students are normally present in the school building and must involve participation from all school personnel and students present at school at the time of the lockdown drill, except that administrators or school support personnel in their discretion may exempt students from the lockdown drill. Our local law enforcement shall observe the administration of the lockdown drill.
As also required by Illinois, schools must provide sufficient information and notification to parents and guardians in advance of any walk-through lockdown drill that involves the participation of students.
Roosevelt School will conduct their first lockdown drill on Monday, August 28.
Schools must also provide parents and guardians an opportunity to exempt their children for any reason from participating in the walk-through lockdown drill. If you wish your child to be exempted from the law enforcement lockdown drill, please contact the Main Office at (847) 318-4235.
If your child is exempted from the drill, we will provide alternative safety education and instruction related to an active threat or active shooter event to provide those students with essential information, training, and instruction through less sensorial safety training methods.
Thank you for your support in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our students and staff.
Sincerely,
Dr. Dwyer, Principal

Electronic Device Guidelines
Click the photo to the right for the direct link to the D64 Parent Handbook device policy (p. 24).
Parents can help ensure smartwatches are set to not allow notifications from other apps by placing the device in a mode that does more than silence it. For instance, with an Apple Watch, a parent can put the device in “Schooltime” mode, which limits how the student can use the watch during school. Schooltime mode also easily allows staff members to see that the watch is configured to not be a distraction during school. You can find steps on how to 24 set up Schooltime mode here. Android users can find parental controls by following these steps. Parents can configure wearable smart devices in other available ways as long as students cannot communicate with the device or use any apps during school.
