April is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month. Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth treated 1,496 patients for child abuse in 2016 alone. The United States loses on average between four and seven children every day to child abuse and neglect. Additionally, children who experience child abuse and neglect are more likely to develop heart disease, COPD, liver disease, and other health-related quality of life issues. If you know a child who is being abused, stand up for them! The National Child Abuse hotline is 1-800-422-4453.

On Thursday, April 27th, A Co. 7-158th Aviation, Fort Hood, Texas, will land a Black Hawk on the WHS practice field behind the Outback. Students will be given the opportunity to visit with the pilots as well as climb into the helicopter to check it out! Should be an exciting time!

Sexual Assault Prevention Awareness Month is also in April. Those aged 12-34 are at the highest risk for crimes of sexual violence. Be aware of the warning signs that someone might have been assaulted such as changes in weight, sleep, eating, mood, hygiene, and grades. If you know someone who has been sexually assaulted, there is help out there! The National Sexual Assault Hotline is 1-800-656- HOPE (4673) or call the Freedom House Hotline at 1-817-596-8922.

Bryce Spangler and Nathan Gay competed against 25 other schools in Video Game Design, but due to a written technicality, unfortunately did not place. However, it was said they otherwise would have won 1st place as their design was outstanding and vastly superior to all the others.

The Varsity baseball team had a home game against Abilene April 7th, taking the win 13-4. Blake Burrows pitched well in the win going 4 innings and striking out 7. Offensively, Lukas Loran had a triple to score 3 runs and a ground out to score another for 4 RBIs on the night. Preston Edison had a triple of his own going 2-4, Blake Burrows had a double, Mason Zamarron went 2-4 scoring 3 runs. Chance Ragsdale went 3-4 scoring 2 runs, and Hunter McMillin had an RBI single. This win made the Roos 5-3 in district and 13-11 on the season.

The Roos had a home game last Tuesday night against Haltom winning 5-1 Mason Hilton picked up the win, pitching 7 innings, striking out 12 and allowing only 5 hits. The Kangaroo offense was led by Lukas Loran with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Blake Burrows and Mason Zamarron had 2 hits apiece, and Burrows added 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. James Moreno had an RBI double. The win brings the Kangaroo record to 14-11 and 6-3 in district play.

The Roos defeated Haltom at the end of the week 3-0. Blake Burrows took the win, going all 7 innings allowing no runs on 4 hits with 9 Ks. Blake Burrows also led the offense with a triple, a single, two stolen bases and a run scored. Mason Zamarron had two hits and scored a run. James Moreno drove in two runs on a ground ball up the middle. Demarcus Gratts also had a double on the night. The win brings our record to 15-11 overall and 7-3 in district setting up a big match up at Fossil Ridge on Tuesday at 7:30.

Way to go, Roo Baseball!

The WHS Tennis recently competed in the district tournament. Preston Spivey competed both days and brought home 1st place in District for Boys Singles. In the final match, Spivey defeated his opponent in just two quick sets 6-2, 6-2. Spivey with be heading to the Regional Tennis Tournament at UTA.

Student Council traveled to Arlington for the State Convention. They earned a Sweepstakes Rating for their projects in the following domains:

Students, do you need to take the SAT for college? The SAT will be given here at WHS for the first time ever on Saturday, June 3rd! This is a great opportunity to take the SAT right here at your school. The deadline to register at CollegeBoard.org is May 9th. Again, the SAT will be given at WHS for the first time ever on Saturday, June 3rd. BAD HAIRDAY?

The usual start to prom readiness might include a spritz of hairspray, or spurt of shaving cream. These aerosol spray cans contain hydrocarbons and/or compressed greenhouse gases notorious for their contribution to global warming. Every time you hit the button you are raising your carbon footprint.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

You can swap out hairspray cans for gel in a tub and use roll on sticks of deodorant instead of canned deodorant. Just a few alternatives to shaving cream are baby oil, some raw honey with a bit of water, and regular old bar soap.

FAST AND FURIOUS?

Carbon monoxide + carbon dioxide are the primary air pollutants produced by a car. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that keeps solar radiation trapped within the atmosphere, causing global warming. The U.S. Energy Information Administration found, after electric power generation, transportation was the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Cut down on the release of carbons and other pollutants into the air by asking friends to carpool to and from prom!!!

The Dress Exchange is back! If you have dresses you've let sit in the closet too long, come donate them to k204, and let someone else put them to good use! Likewise, if you are in need of an extra dress for, say, PROM, or a banquet, you may come take a peek!

Attention Seniors – Scholarship season is here! Did you know that last year’s senior class was awarded over $3.5 million dollars in scholarships? Let’s make this year the best year ever for scholarship awards. Many scholarships have deadlines coming up right away. Scholarships are available for all students who have a desire to attend college. Go to the Counseling Office often to get the latest information on scholarships and pick up applications.

Larry Mangrem Scholarship: Students planning to attend The University of Texas at Austin are eligible for this $1,000 scholarship. Applicants must fill out an application, enclose a transcript, and write a one-page essay about their career plans. Students will also need to enclose a copy of their Letter of Acceptance to UT. Come by the Counseling Center for an application. The deadline is April 28, 2017, so all future Longhorns need to apply soon!
