National Merit Scholarship Program - Letters of Commendation
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking that 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
"Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success, " commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."
Counselors' Corner
Jean Cohick continues to support our juniors and seniors as Vickey Campman’s long-term substitute counselor through the end of November. She has served several previous leaves in our counseling department and is well acquainted with our high school and staff, as well as many students and families.
We also welcome two counselor interns to our high school team this semester. Kendall Watkins is finishing up her graduate studies at Bloomsburg University and Vicki Schaffer is currently a graduate student at Messiah University. They have both hit the ground running and are already valuable members of our high school team.
Seniors who are completing a Common App should use Mrs. Cohick’s contact information under the counselor section. This information will be transferred to Mrs. Campman upon her return. Her email is jcohick@loyalsocklancers.org.
All seniors and their families who are seeking financial aid for college must complete the 2023-2024 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa . This application will become available on October 1 and will also incorporate
Pennsylvania State Aid through PHEAA (Pennsylvania Higher Education
Assistance Agency). Get this completed and submitted ASAP to be sure you
are getting the maximum amount of qualified aid.
Students who are interested in taking the SAT have the opportunity to do so on Saturday, November 5 and Saturday, December 3. Registration must be completed online at collegeboard.org a month prior to testing.

Project Linus Make a Blanket
One of National Honor Society’s (NHS) pillars is Service. Loyalsock High School’s NHS members have been providing service hours throughout the summer by helping with school orientations and most recently by volunteering at Project Linus Make a Blanket Day. The NHS members helped the 100% volunteer Susquehanna Valley Chapter of Project Linus to make warm blankets for sick, injured, and traumatized children. Their motto is we provide children with warm hugs when they need them the most. Their group provided over 800 blankets in 2021 and after this most recent event, took 354 blankets to Lewisburg for distribution. The organizer of the project said our NHS students were a great help, had a great attitude, and seemed to have fun. Thank you to all NHS members who provided this service!*
