Information Technology careers for South Central and Southwest MN
- 7 of the 11 Information Technology occupations in the region are expected to see new job growth from 2014 to 2024.
- Median wages for computer and mathematical occupations was $28.04, which is nearly $9.00 higher per hour than the total of all occupations.
- Around three-quarters of the IT job vacancies required post-secondary education and over 80% required at least a year of prior work experience.
- Information Technology workers are employed in a wide variety of industries.

While attending school you are learning valuable skills that employers require and skills that will lead to success in life.
School teaches life skills along with academic skills. Here are few of the life skills you are learning while attending school.
Communication Skills
You communicate daily at school with classmates, teachers and other school staff. Your ability to develop and improve verbal, non-verbal and written communications skills in high school will help you when communicating with customers, co-workers, peers and supervisors in the workforce.
Teamwork Skills
The next time you have to work in a group project, remember that you are learning how to work on a team, a needed skill in employment.
Time Management
In school you have deadlines for tests and assignments which is similar to work deadline such as project deadlines. Being able to manage your time at school and in life will be a skill you will use for the rest of your life.
How to Learn from Failure
Did an assignment, project or exam not go well? What did you learn from this and what will you do different next time? Things do not always go as planned in school and work but it is important to learn from the failure and reflect what you can do differently next time.
Stepping outside your comfort zone
Scared of giving a speech, presentation, mock interview or other school assignment? In life we are often put in situation outside our comfort zone. Although this maybe scary, there is a good chance the experience will teach new skills and increase your confidence.
Remember school is preparing you with skills needed in life.
