On this episode of HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawaiʻi, watch a special collection of stories from Hawai‘i’s New Wave of Storytellers’ first round of shows this season.
Maya and Miya Tasaka, 5th graders at Waikīkī Elementary School, join as hosts, making history as HIKI NŌ’s first twin hosts. They share two videos they produced with their classmates at Waikīkī Elementary School, the first of which tells the story about how they addressed wayward dodgeballs at recess, and another explainer video they produced about how to use a Braille typewriter.
The episode continues with stories from students at Highlands Intermediate School on O‘ahu, covering the latest science behind criminal justice and a profile of a woman in Palolo who narrowly escaped a boulder that crashed into her house.
Samuel Paci, a senior at H.P. Baldwin High School on Maui, profiles his stepfather, a Maui firefighter.
Highlighted work also includes student reflections from Mari Iwata, a senior at Waiākea High School on Hawai‘i Island and Sophia Santos, a freshman at Pearl City High School on O’ahu, who share whatʻs going on in their lives as they pursue extracurricular activities.
From Hawai‘i Island, watch a profile story of a kumu hula and Hawaiian studies teacher by students at Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy, along with a feature story about a pizza parlor and video game arcade produced by Hilo High School students, who received second place in the 2023 Fall Challenge.
Kua O Ka Lā Public Charter School students also share how they are contributing to an online virtual tour initiative and bringing a global audience to their home in Miloli‘i.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Reminders
During the 2022-23 school year, a Safe Routes to School study was conducted with the assistance of students from the University of Hawaii's Urban and Regional Planning department. Data was collected over several days tracking family habits on coming to school in the morning. Based on the numbers below, a sizable amount of students walk or bike to Waikiki School.
