Panther Prowl
Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Greetings Panther Families!
We are in the midst of some very exciting times at Corona High School! Keeping true to our Tradition of Excellence--Since 1896, we are welcoming changes and new traditions. Tonight (September 7th) we will debut our new turf in Panther Stadium for our Homecoming game. We are continuing our focus on our RAWR expectations for all students (Respectful, Accountable, Well-connected, Resilient), and the excitement of a new school year is prevalent throughout our campus. It truly is a great day to be a Panther!
I'd like to encourage all our parents to reach out to your students' teachers with questions about progress or any concerns that you might have. The first progress reports will be going out soon and in order for us to truly maximize all our students' success, we must work together. Let's also continue to foster positive habits (see Attendance Awareness Month info near the bottom) early on to ensure a productive 2018-19 for all our students!
Now, enjoy your Panther Prowl for September 7, 2018. RAWR!!!
Proudly,
Antonio Gonzalez, Ed.D.,
Principal

- Spanish with Mr. Quillen and Ms. Gomez in S-202 and S-204, respectively
Schedule for September 15th:

RAWR
I just want to remind you all of our behavior expectations of all our students: RAWR! We will begin a recognition program next week across our campus to reinforce these positive behaviors. Should your student receive one of these recognitions, be sure to congratulate him/her on doing their part to improve our school climate.
- Respectful: Panthers honor the worth and value of themselves and others
- Accountable: Panthers strive to take ownership of their actions and success
- Well-connected: Panthers are actively involved in their education and school community
- Resilient: Panthers bounce back from difficult experiences and mistakes
L.I.F.E. Award (Corona STEM Academy)
Two Corona STEM Academy Biomedical students were recognized at the LIFE (Learning Inspired Field Experience) Ceremony held at our district office on September 5th. Panthers, Daisy Ramirez and Guadalupe Moreno (pictured below), participated in LIFE which brings students and employers together to give students experience in a health care environment. Participants invested over 40 hours engaging in various sectors of the health care industry. Daisy and Guadalupe both received an educational award in the amount of $200 from the Guillermo J. Valenzuela Foundation for demonstrating outstanding work ethic, behavior, and attitude during their experience. Way to represent our Corona STEM Academy, ladies!

ASB Cards
A great way for your child to have a better high school experience is by getting him/her involved in any of extracurricular activities and events. An ASB card provides opportunities throughout the year for our students get involved while saving money. This little card can very well end up saving $$$ over the course of the year and can even pay for itself after only a few uses. Here are some of the perks:
- FREE admission to ALL home sporting events, excluding CIF playoffs (these are never free); that's a savings of at least $125
- Discounts on ALL dances and events (including the Performing Arts); that's another savings of at least $30
- FREE athletic patches and inserts (patches cost $20 without an ASB card and inserts cost $5); that's a potential savings of at least $25
- FREE giveaways on GOT ASB? Days (last Friday students received a free t-shirt)
- ASB Cards can be purchased for $40 in the Student Store, but students receive benefits valued at approximately $200 (maybe even more as new activities get added to the calendar throughout the year)
Athletics
- Football: Congratulations to our freshman boys for taking the W on our new turf on September 6th against Silverado High School (picture below courtesy of Leigh Beltran, parent)! They looked sharp in their 34-20 victory! Tonight (September 7th) we will host our first varsity game unde the lights against Silverado. Come on out for our homecoming game and watch our Panthers play for their third victory of the season.
- Girls Volleyball: Our girls saw their 6-game winning streak snapped in opening play of the Big VIII season. We traveled to Roosevelt High School and played an exciting match, but fell short. Our next game will be against Centennial High School back on our home court.
- Girls Golf: On August 30th our girls golf team came home with a win against Banning HS at Sun Lakes Golf Club; Jule Gutierrez had the Panthers' low score of the match. The following match against Lakeside High School on September 6th also went our way and the team earned another victory with the entire team playing their personal best. Great job Panthers: Jule Gutierrez, Savannah Mathews, Emily Baird, Leah Hellerud, Jenna Aragon, and Karleny Jimenez.
- Girls Tennis: Hats off to Coach Osterkamp and her coaching staff for their ongoing efforts in growing our tennis program. After a strong start and a setback at El Modena High School, our Panthers bounced back with a victory over Arlington High School, a team that beat us 4-14 just last season. This year we won with a score of 12-6, highlighting our continuous improvement. Tennis pictures below courtesy of Leigh Beltran, parent.

Suicide Awareness Month
- September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Although it is extremely important to address this year-round, this month highlights these issues and provides a time for mental health advocates, prevention organizers, survivors, allies, and community members to unite to promote suicide awareness. According to the Jason Foundation, which is dedicated to the prevention of the “Silent Epidemic” of youth suicide through educational and awareness programs that equip young people, educators/youth workers and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth, shared that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for our youth ages 10-24 (2016, CDC WISQARS). Follow this link for more information: http://jasonfoundation.com/
Counselors, teachers, administration, clerks, custodians, parents, adults, and friends are in a key position to notice signs and to reach out to get help. Awareness and education are the first steps to prevention. Suicide is preventable. It is important to know the Warning Signs:
--Increased alcohol and drug use
--Aggressive behavior
--Social withdrawal from friends, family and the community
--Dramatic mood swings
--Talking, writing or thinking about death
--Impulsive or reckless behavior
--Giving away important possessions
--Feeling unbearable pain (emotional pain or physical pain)
--Talk about being a burden to others
--Warning Signs and Risk of Suicide: https://www.nami.org/Learn-More/Mental-Health-Conditions/Related-Conditions/Risk-of-Suicide
If you believe someone is in danger of completing suicide or has a made a suicide attempt, get emergency help:
--Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room
- Our Unity leaders will be raising awareness at our school by hosting a different event each day. See the schedule/flyer below.
