Ms. Wertheim's World Changers
News and Resources from Room 203
What are we up to this week?
- FUNdations: We are finishing Unit 9 this week and our Unit 9 test with be this Thursday! We are continuing practice with the R-Controlled Syllable. R-controlled syllables have r-controlled sounds, including: ar, or, ir, ur, and er. The keywords are car, horn, her, bird, and burn. To mark this syllable type, we scoop the syllable from beginning to end, circle the r-controlled combination, and mark an "r" under to syllable to show that it is r-controlled. Trick words for this unit include: picture, learn, earth, father, brother, and mother.
- Reading: We are continuing with main idea. Students are identifying the main topic of a multi-paragraph text and specific paragraphs within a text. We are also focusing on biographies as we study famous African Americans throughout Black History Month. Students are tracking their thinking and learning by identifying important facts and interesting details. To mark important information, students draw a star. We are also beginning to use Text Codes to track thinking while reading.
- Writing: Students are researching historic African Americans and creating "All About" books.
- Math: We are continuing with fractions. Students are partitioning circles, squares, and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths.
- Social Studies: We are beginning an amazing TAPAS residency with Mrs. Allbach, the Media Center Coordinator and collage artist, Ginger Huebner. Students will learn about the work of Romare Bearden and his depictions of race and identity. Create original art that expresses the themes of community and racial identity with emphasis on students’ individual voices, experiences, and cultures. The individual pieces will be assembled into a collage which will be a permanent display in the Media Center. We will also be doing a Skype lesson this week to discuss culture with Homa Tavangar, the author of Growing Up Global.
- Science: We are continuing with Sound School, developed by the Dr. Bob Moog Foundation right here in Asheville! In this week's lesson, students will explore vibrations, which we call "the wiggle!" Don't forget to mark your calendar: students will have a chance to share what they've learned about sound through a performance at the Orange Peel on April 14th! If you play an instrument and are interested in visiting our class to perform or talk about music, please email me!
