SOLON INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
MONTHLY UPDATE - FEBRUARY 2020
PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
What a great start to the 2020 year! While the month of January seemed to fly by, it was full of community building, collaboration, and fun! We kicked off our kindness campaign and students have already begun expanding their daily acts of kindness! We have new kindness ambassadors in each classroom, and empathy, compassion, and inclusion are spreading around the building like wildfire!
I was so excited to see the large number of SIS students who took the time to write their statements of interest in becoming a kindness ambassador. The decision was tough and we had to narrow our choices to one student per class. However, we want to recognize those students who were not chosen but who still want to be involved in a leadership type role. I will be assembling a new group of students each month to help organize the end of the month kindness assembly. These students will have the opportunity, along with the ambassadors, to plan and lead the assembly activity for that month. I will choose from the list of students who originally applied for kindness ambassador and will communicate a meeting time with those students (and their teachers) as we get closer to the end of each month. In order to give more students an opportunity to participate, I will choose a new group each month. I am so proud of the tremendous amount of young leaders we have at SIS!
As always, thank you for your continued support! Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions and/or feedback as my door is always open.

THANK YOU MRS. PENTICO!
National School Counseling Week 2020 (#NSCW2020) is Feb. 3rd–7th. The week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and the tremendous impact they can have in helping students achieve school success. Take a moment to thank our counselor, Heather Pentico! Follow #NSCW2020 on social media. We will wear orange & black on Tuesday, February 4th to show our appreciation for all the wonderful things Mrs. Pentico does for our SIS students!

MESSAGE FROM THE NURSE
FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM MRS. ELIJAH
In order to protect our students with allergies and food intolerances, treats brought for celebrations must be commercially prepared food with an intact ingredient label or fresh, uncut fruit and vegetables. Items not meeting these requirements will not be used and will be returned home. No homemade treats will be accepted.
*Similarly, to protect our students with allergies and intolerances, class wide goodie bags and valentines shall include non-food items only.
COLD WEATHER REMINDERS
With the cold weather upon us, we want to take a few minutes to remind all of our students about the expectations during recess. Please help us reinforce the following expectations by adding them to your daily school conversations at home:
- Students must have snowshoes and snow pants on to be able to play in the snow, otherwise they must stay on hard surfaces only
- No snowball fights, snow should not be flying towards anyone or anything
- Students should stay off any icy areas as they could slip and get hurt
- Labeling all hats, gloves, snow pants and boots will help reduce the number of lost items during the winter months
- Sledding during recess will be allowed on Thursdays when there is at least 2-3 inches of snow on the ground.
The cold weather can also bring changes to some of our student's normal dismissal routines. Please be sure to email your child's classroom teacher and the office (larwine@solon.k12.ia.us) by noon with any changes to their dismissal plan. This will help us ensure a smooth dismissal and that each student gets to where they are supposed to at the end of the day. It will also help ensure that your child has the necessary bus pass if they are going to ride on a different bus that day.
