Principal's Report
Start and Finish Times
Our morning procedures have been going beautifully, which is excellent - lots of independent young people striding into school by themselves! After a few hiccups, our afternoon pickups seem to be going smoothly now.
Please make sure that your child knows in the morning whether they are being collected by you on foot, being picked up by car in the pick-up zone, catching a bus or going to WEMOOSH.
Just a reminder to not hang around in front of the canteen or at the front gate while waiting for your child to come out of class. Please wait under the main COLA outside the library and remain at least 1.5m from other adults, including staff.
If you need to talk to the teacher at the front gate or on car duty, please also be respectful in maintaining the 1.5m distance and in the way that you approach them. Sadly we did have a very small number of instances last week where some parents/carers spoke inappropriately to the staff outside the school. I understand that it may have been frustrating as the procedure took some time to get right, but it's important to remember that this is all new to us too, and we are all trying to do the best that we can to make sure our children get home safely. If you have any concerns, please make a time to speak with me.
Bugs and germs
In addition to COVID-19, please be aware that there appears to be a vomiting bug circulating at the moment. If your child is unwell with an upset tummy, keep an eye on them. If your child becomes ill at school, please come and get them straight away. We are all continuing to practice excellent personal hygiene so I'm hopeful that it will be out of MEPS soon. And don't forget that if your child is unwell with any upper respiratory symptoms - cough, cold, runny nose, sore throat - please keep them at home and get tested where appropriate. Thank you :)
School Reports
Semester 1 reports will look different from our usual reports, due to the changes in learning as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. While there are general guidelines that all schools need to follow, the format of reports and the timeline in which they are sent home will be configured according to each school's context.
What will MEPS reports look like?
Our reports will contain the following:
- English comment
- Maths comment
- Other Key Learning Areas comment
- Future directions/general comment
- Attitudes to Learning scale
In addition, we're including a self-assessment comment from the student. Parents/carers are also welcome to add a comment in, however this isn't compulsory.
Please note that there will be no A-E achievement scale in the Semester 1 reports.
When will MEPS reports go home?
All students will receive their report by the end of Week 2, Term 3, for learning up to the end of Week 10, Term 2.
We will also be conducting 3-Way Conferences with the teacher, students and parent/carers present - this could be face-to-face, but may be on Zoom depending on the Department of Education requirements in terms of physical distancing.
You'll receive an invitation to book a 3-Way Conference time at the beginning of Term 3.
Our Semester 2 reports will go back to their usual format.
This is a wonderful opportunity for growth and looking at our students' future goals - I know that while it is been a hard few months for everyone, there's also been a great surge in building resilience, perseverance, lots of creativity and maintaining a positive mindset.
I hope your week is brilliant!
Take care and stay safe,
Robyn Christie

LIBRARY NEWS
Overdues
Overdue notices were sent home on Thursday afternoon. Could you please locate these items and return to the school (office or library) as soon as possible that would be greatly appreciated. There are a lot of overdue books out at the momen that other students are eagerly waiting to borrow.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Thank you to the wonderful teachers who supported this event at MEPS by playing the video recording of "Whitney and Britney: Chicken Divas" at 11am. This was the 20th year this event has run so it was all the more special to read this at the same time as 1,000,000+ other students and families.
Book Week
Because of Covid 19, the CBCA annual Book Week celebration has been postponed until 17th-23rd October. The theme this year is 'Curious Creatures, Wild Minds' and we'll let you know more as we get closer to the date - so watch this space! The short list has been announced and we have a display of some of the books in the library for students to check out. I also read from some of the selected titles during our learning from home in Weeks 1-4. More Information can be found at: https://cbca.org.au/
Kindy
Continuing on from our unit last term of Personal and Family Histories we read the book: 'Grandma's treasured shoes' by Coral Vass & illustrated by Christina Huynh. (2019) Our learning intention was to identify artifacts that are important to family histories.
The book told the story of a grandmother whose favorite shoes were the ones she wore as a little girl when she escaped Vietnam as a refugee to come to Australia. Students then reflected on what objects or heirlooms were important to their families and then drew a picture of them.
Year 1 & 2
Continuing on from our unit last term of Past and Present Family Life, we read the book: 'Stories for Simon' written by Lisa Miranda Sarzin & illustrated by Lauren Briggs (2015). This book ties in nicely with the theme of Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day as it tells the story of Simon who receives a gift wrapped in an old newspaper. The headline of the paper is the Sorry speech given by former prime minister Kevin Rudd. Simon trades stones he got in a dream to an older aboriginal lady for her stories. The last story she tells explains how she was taken from her family as a little girl and of the stolen generation. This book succeeds in explaining a very difficult topic to students in kind, friendly language.
Classes then made their own sorry stones and coloured them in to display in the library.
Years 3-6
We read on to Chapter 18 of our novel 'Small Spaces' by Katherine Arden where Olie finally comes to terms with the loss of her mother. She is paralysed on the bridge to the farm by thoughts of her mother and the funeral and unexpectedly it is Coco of all people, that comes to her aid. We discussed the unusual character development and how as readers we may have underestimated Coco from the beginning. Students then completed their Instagram post sheets from last term.
Flo's Book Club
We're back!!! It was really great to see everyone again this week face to face and hear about all the wonderful books you guys are reading at the moment. We got to have a sneak peek of the new books that are coming into the library. There are a stack of graphic novels on their way too. Lots of excitement.

Community News
Mayfield East PS P&C
We have created a school community segment called "My Mayfield" where we are asking your child/ren to create a drawing/artwork/story of what they love about their community.
Do they have a favourite cafe, park or school teacher? Do they wish to see something specific in their school playground? Perhaps their favourite part of Mayfield is who lives in their home!
We would love to know what you love (and undoubtedly miss) about your neighbourhood and hope that you will participate. I'm sure we are all missing each other!
When your creation is finished, could you please send it to the Mayfield East P&C Facebook page with a brief description of what it is so we can share it with everyone?
Pictures will be posted weekly and please no names on the artwork.
Have fun crafting and creating!
This week we are kicking off a ‘guess who’ game to help the MEPS community get to know each other a bit more. Each week we will try to guess who our secret person is from a daily clue that will be posted on the MEPS P&C Facebook page.
