Principal Message
Dear Cooper Families,
Ahhhh, October has arrived and the cooler weather is on its way! Cooper is a very busy place! Students have been working really hard this first month of school getting back into school routines! Students are earning Cooper PAWS by practicing respect, accepting responsibility, working together, and staying safe. Each classroom collects these PAWS to meet their class goal and earn a class celebration. Once a classroom meets their goals, they help the school reach the ALL SCHOOL CELEBRATION! Mrs. Ninham, our School Counselor along with our Cooper Way team and whole staff continue to support and encourage student behavior by using positive behavior supports and interventions. We appreciate all you do to support your student as well.
Thank you to our PTO who organized the Family Playground Mixer earlier in September. What a wonderful time to visit and meet new families! There will be a number of P.T.O. fun family events later this month! Look for information on the Scholastic Book Fair October 25-27 and Trunk and Treat the evening of Friday, October 28th!
District testing should be completed over the next few weeks. All 5K-5th grade students take the iReady diagnostic test in reading and mathematics. Our 4K students are assessed using the PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screener) starting mid October. Each reading teacher also listens to each student read and does an assessment called, a Running Record. A running record is a tool that helps teachers identify patterns in a student's reading behaviors. All of these assessments give a teacher a wider and deeper “picture” of the individual student. The information helps the teacher plan instruction but also is used with the student to help set personal learning goals and select books for the student at his or her appropriate level.
Much of this will be shared with you at Parent Teacher Conferences coming up at the end of the month. Please look for more information coming soon.
We encourage ALL our students to spend some time each evening reading and enjoying literature. ALL students should be bringing home books- 4K-2nd grade students should have BOOK BAGS with a variety of books at the student's level. Grades 3rd-5th should have either a book bag or a chapter book at his or her reading level to read each evening as homework. We encourage 20 minutes of reading or more 4-7 nights per week. We encourage families to read-a-loud at all levels as this brings excitement and extends the genre to the whole family.
I want to end by thanking you for helping your child get off to a great start this school year! Keep encouraging your child to get "wild about learning!"
Regards,
Jackey Syens

Encourage Literacy- Reading, Writing, Storytelling
Our younger students are learning to read so we need to do all we can to help them FALL IN LOVE with reading. Here are some easy ways you can encourage your child to fall in love with reading
- Set a family reading time each evening
- Family read aloud
- Let your child select the books
- Rereading favorite books is great
- Have fun!
Reading is necessary for learning so instilling it in an early age is the key to helping your child unlock the doors to life-long learning!
Fire Prevention Month
October is Fire Prevention month. We are so thankful to the City of Burlington Fire Department for all their support! On Wednesday, October 12, they will spend a half-day with our 4K-2nd grade students sharing about fire safety, fire safety equipment and having some fun. Please spend some time with your child talking about fire safety and making a plan just incase there was ever an emergency at your home.
