Recess!
Waldorf education founder, Rudolf Steiner, speaks directly to the importance of play and free time with his quote “Play is the work of childhood. When children play they are experiencing the world with their entire being.” One of the great cross-grade level games we find on our campus is the rowdy, but inclusive, game of "speed-hoops". Children from grades three through six can be seen taking turns shooting baskets as fast as they can and then running the ball back to the next waiting friend. It's loud, it's fun, and it's also important learning about taking turns, cheering for friends, and including others.

Dear Siskiyou School Parents,
All is well on campus! Today the 8th grade presentations began. It is so exciting for everyone to see the 8th graders speak so well and with passion and interest about the topics they chose to study this year. Today we heard from Bella, Caydence and Ben; their presentations were wonderful and what they produced in their projects was excellent. The 8th grade project is a big culmination (and requirement for graduating from the school) and truly a right-of-passage experience. Please see the schedule below in the office section; join us in Pine Hall for any of the presentations. They give you a good glimpse into how well our students present and also into what your child would be doing in 8th grade.
Tomorrow we offer our monthly main lesson tour at 8:30am. Nina will guide the tour and answer questions along the way; please don’t miss this opportunity to see all eight classes in action during main lesson.
Nina’s talk tomorrow evening is not to be missed by parents of 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. See below for more information.
Spring break is around the corner and I’m sure families have plans for some travelling or staying at home. Spring camp will be offered in the second week; please see more details below. It’s always fun to be on campus during breaks for camp!
Have a good week and stay warm in this wintry weather! My best, Aurilia
Eighth Grade Project Presentations
We're excited to have had the first of our 8th graders present their 8th grade projects to our community today! Over the next two weeks, the rest of our Hummingbird class will present their projects. In each, 8th graders will describe what they chose for their project and what they learned and respond to questions from the audience. Please note the dates below and plan to join!
We’re happy to be able to share our 8th Grade Project Presentations with our wider community in Pine Hall and over Zoom. A link to join us online was sent to all currently enrolled parents on Monday, March 6. If you missed the link, please let us know and we can share it with you. You are welcome to tune in and check out the amazing work done by the Hummingbird Class this year, but please, for the safety of our students, do NOT post this link over social media or share on a wide scale.
8th Grade Project Presentations will also be recorded and available to view through a YouTube link.
Also, please join us on Thursday, March 16th from 6:00 to 8:00 for our 8th grade project Open House! Chat with the students and learn more about their amazing projects.
Crossing the Bridge - TOMORROW, Wednesday March 8, 6:30 pm
Between the age of 7 years and 10 years, a child goes through a marked change in consciousness. There are huge neurological developments that create the enhanced ability to manage more abstract thinking, and the child becomes more capable, both physically and academically. At the same time, the emotional seat of the brain is wiring in, and the child learns to navigate their “feeling” life as they “cross the bridge” into the second phase of childhood and the dawn of adolescence.
How parents and teachers hold the child during this critical stage of childhood can deeply support the child’s maturing emotional life and sets seeds for the development of the teen years.
Nina Gallwey is one of our founding teachers and has 33 years experience working with children. This talk is for parents of all ages as Nina will speak to how the bridge years can be prepared for and how they affect the adolescent.
This presentation will not be recorded, but we will share a previous recording of this talk in our Tuesday Notice next week.
Main Lesson Tour - Wednesday, March 8, 8:30 am
Class 7 - Dragonfly Class
This week the 7th Graders take up the study of Chemistry. Beginning with some history, we learn a timeline of events that lead us to modern science. Those historical moments include evidence of the earliest known fire builders of China, the perfume makers of the Fertile Crescent, the Aristotelian decisions on matter, the alchemists of the Middle Ages, and ultimately the fact seekers of the Renaissance. Demonstrations in class will hone our skills of observation and bring about the creation of lab reports which include lists of materials, descriptions of process, and conclusions based in fact. Combustion will be our main area of focus, and the components of oxygen and carbon dioxide will dovetail nicely into our study of Physiology coming next month, which begins with the study of the human respiratory system.
We continue apace in literature class and all other central courses of study and we are enjoying a new round of Middle School Friday offerings. There’s excitement in the air around 8th Grade Projects as we step into an awareness that we are next! In one year, it will be us up there on the stage sharing our experiences of this great Siskiyou School tradition. We will take notes and write recaps on each presentation we attend, and we’ll begin discussions on ideas of our own. It is a very busy time in the 7th Grade. All is well.

a half day lecture and hand-on workshop on March 18th, 10 am - 3pm @ 513 Carter Lane, Ashland.
For farmers or gardeners who have yet to witness the alchemy of terrestrial and cosmic forces working together to crystallize cow dung into a magical garden superfood that softens clay soil, encourages plant vigor and reduces pest impact, this half-day workshop will be a delightful experience that may allow you to reconsider purchasing expensive amendments, fertilizers and pest management supplies for your garden.

Raise Your Voice!
You are invited to a Listening Session with state rep Pam Marsh Saturday, March 18th, 2 pm (coming down from Salem) hosted by the local chapter of the AAUW for a bill into legislature for an Early Childhood Family Voucher to encourage and promote ethnic and socio-economic diversity and increase access to Waldorf EC programs, specifically, to give families a choice of the kind of EC programs they would like their child to attend. We need to show up in numbers, regardless if we benefit from this directly. This is our chance to self advocate for our families and for other families for the future of our children. Please see flyer for details.

THE FOUNDATIONS OF LEARNING WORKSHOP
March 25 and 26 9:00-4:30
Supporting the Developing Child From The Inside Out
Join Nina Gallwey for a rich exploration into how learning arises from within the child and how to enhance and strengthen the foundations that support academic and healthy social skills. Discover how we all learn differently depending on the gateways open to us and how to access gateways that have been closed. Come away with an abundant tool chest to unlock your (and your child’s) highest potential.
What a recent participant of this workshop shared: "Thank you again for the wonderful weekend. It has been life-changing (and practice-changing for me). This workshop helped me to see my own neurologic patterns and to understand how I can recognize the neurologic patterns of my clients. Using the movement based exercises you taught, I have already seen profound changes in my clients' abilities to focus and to organize their brains and bodies. -CU
