The many benefits of spending time in nature have been very well documented in recent years. Unfortunately, a number of national surveys have revealed that BIPOC individuals, and especially Black youth, engage with parks and green spaces at much lower rates than do their white counterparts.
In this episode of Verdant Views, offered in recognition of Black History Month, host Kevin Moss welcomes Don Rakow, associate professor in the Section of Horticulture in Cornell’s School of Integrative Plant Science, and Catherine Thrasher-Carroll, Mental Health Promotion Program Director at the Skorton Center for Health Initiatives at Cornell Health.
The presentations will include both a historical framework and current conditions that serve as barriers to greater use by people of color, and will discuss various efforts underway to make natural spaces more open, inviting, and responsive to expressed needs, including the NatureRx@Cornell initiative.

Alf E. Jacques (Onondaga, Turtle Clan) is a renowned wooden lacrosse stick maker and lacrosse player. The art of stick-making is part of traditional Haudenosaunee knowledge and practice passed down from generation to generation. Alf learned how to make lacrosse sticks from his father, Louis Jacques, who taught Alf at age twelve how to carve and web lacrosse sticks. Alf and his father crafted nearly 12,000 lacrosse sticks per year at the height of their stick-making operation in the 1970s. Alf has spent nearly six decades now crafting sticks from shagbark hickory, and is regarded as one of the foremost stick-makers in the world.
