Mustang Memo November
Nixon-Smiley Middle School
Message from the Principal
NSMS Family,
Wow, it is hard to believe it is already November. November is the month of Thanksgiving and I feel that I have a ton to be thankful for. I am thankful for the support of my staff, students, and the community of NSMS. I am thankful to work in the most wonderful school district that supports our educators and students as we journey through the year. Most of all, I am thankful for all of the opportunities we have been given (and continue to have) to help Nixon-Smiley children learn and grow and the daily impact that we are able to make on young lives.
As we begin the second nine weeks, please be sure to talk with your student about their academics. One of the biggest adjustments students struggle to make in middle school is getting their assignments turned in on time. Three-week progress reports will go home on Tuesday, November 8th. Please make sure you are checking your child's grades regularly on the parent portal. Please also ensure your child is here every day unless they are sick or have an appointment. One of the biggest impacts on a student's success in school is their attendance. Please ensure that your child is at school every day. Students have to be in school 90% of the time in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Attendance is taken every period so coming in late or leaving early does have a negative effect on their attendance (and more than likely their grades as well). If you have questions about attendance rules or procedures please feel free to give me a call.
As this semester continues to fly by, keep encouraging your child to treat people right and do the right things. With your help, our campus will continue being a place where your child and every Nixon-Smiley Middle School Student enjoys coming to school and learning each and every day. We are looking forward to the upcoming Thanksgiving lunch (ticket money is due today, Nov 1st). The lunch will be on November 11th. We cannot wait to enjoy a delicious meal with our students and some of their family members. We are also planning to have a Family Night in December so keep your eye out for more information as soon as we have more details.

Anti - Bullying Poster Contest
We had many great activities to promote kindness and be postive during anit-bullying month. One of the activities was a Poster Contest. Students were tasked to create a poster that went along with the anti-bullying month. Students could come in during their lunch and decorate posters or work on them at home. Students had to turn them in to be judged. The winners are below:
