February Newsletter
Notes From the Principal
The month of February can feel like a very long, short month so we fill it with fun things that make coming to school for students more enjoyable. This Friday we have a special visit from nature enthusiast and educator David Stokes. He will teach our 4K-2nd graders about animals and sounds of nature. Additionally, we are excited for our ninth annual Fitness day where high school volunteers and community members run fitness stations for the students to participate in. Ms. Redies, our PE teacher, does a fantastic job coordinating the schedule to provide age appropriate physical activities for students to participate in during the morning. In the afternoon she scheduled the Fon Du Lac Cardinal Skippers to show off some cool jump rope moves!
This month’s focus is Honesty. One way to think about Honesty is “being truthful in what you say and do.” Practicing Honesty helps strengthen our relationships and reduce stress.
Honesty is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Well. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress-management.
A Message from our Director of Teaching and Learning
Dear Families,
At the end of this week, teachers will send a writing sample for your students and a rubric. The writing sample is an “on-demand” assessment. For on-demand assessments, students take one period and write his or her best. Students are not given specific topics, but instead, students have the opportunity to determine what he or she would like to write about. On-demand assessments provide information about what students can do independently and help teachers to determine if skills students have learned transfer into their writing.
Teachers assess student writing using multiple tools including the rubric that is attached. The rubric explains what writing should look like at the end of the year for each grade level. The rubric is a progression of indicators that help teachers understand where a student is in their writing development. Each one of the indicators describes what good writing entails. Teachers can use the indicators to determine ways to move students toward the next step in the progression.
In addition to on-demand writing pieces, students have also been working on pieces that they publish. Published pieces include the opportunity for several revisions, drafts, and feedback. Published pieces are written over time and showcase how students respond to feedback and incorporate new skills and techniques in their writing.
Throughout the year students will have multiple opportunities to create “on-demand” pieces and published pieces. Multiple writing pieces allow teachers, students, and their families to see the growth in students’ writing skills.
After reading your student’s on-demand piece, please return the on-demand writing sample and attached rubric to school. Teachers will collect on-demand pieces throughout the year and will use the writing pieces to help students understand and see their growth as writers.

RITEWAY BUS COMPANY - IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Please be advised of the following changes/updates from Riteway Bus Company.
- ADDING/REMOVING A STUDENT TO A ROUTE:
- If a family wants their student to begin or stop taking the bus they must notify Riteway (262)677-3282.
- STUDENT DROP OFF CHANGE:
- If a family needs to change the drop off location (i.e. student now going to daycare) a special transportation form needs to be completed, returned to the school office, and signed by Dr. Croatt. The signed form will be emailed to Riteway and Riteway will confirm and/or deny the request.
- STUDENT GOING HOME ON SAME BUS BUT GETTING OFF AT A DIFFERENT STOP:
- Students going home on the same bus but getting off at a different stop need a note signed by their parent/guardian so the school and the driver are aware of the change.
- STUDENT GOING HOME ON A DIFFERENT BUS:
- This is ONLY allowed in the event of a family emergency and will ONLY be on an as needed basis. A note/email/phone call should be sent by the parent regarding the emergency so that the school and Riteway are aware of the situation and can convey what route and classmate the student will go home with for that evening.

Our phase 1 playground equipment has arrived and will be installed in spring. We were able to purchase some skid mats for the bottom of the slides and two spinner chairs. Our fundraising efforts will continue to be focused towards playground improvements. Now that we are down a giant tree and more space has opened by the play sheds, we will look at that area as well.

Notes from the Health Room
Hello Rockfield families!
Please remember that with the cold temps and snow we do still go outside daily unless the temps fall below 0 degrees so make sure your children are bundled up and ready to have fun outside!
With the falling temps also comes the winter colds, flu and other illnesses. Please keep your child home if they are not feeling well and/or have a temp over 100, diarrhea, an uncontrollable cough, thick mucus/very runny nose or has vomited in the past 24 hours. They may return 24 hours after symptoms have subsided without the use of medication.
Medication that needs to be taken at school must be brought in by the students guardian and the proper form must be filled out by the parent and/or doctor if it is a prescription. This includes cough drops, eye drops and all over the counter medication. https://5il.co/rphd https://5il.co/rphe
