Introducing Got Assets? Initiative
Got Assets? is a community-wide effort to raise awareness about what Developmental Assets can do for young people and their families. What are Developmental Assets? They are concrete, common sense, positive experiences and qualities essential to raising successful young people. See the list of 40 Developmental Assets here.
Why do Developmental Assets matter? The Search Institute has demonstrated by surveying more than 4 million children and young people that these assets have the power to influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. The more assets experienced by young people, the better. Our district survey from May 2022 shows that on average, our middle school students have 22 out of 40 assets and our high school students have 19 out of 40 assets.
The Asset of the Week is Family Support: Family life provides high levels of love and support. Tips for building this asset: Be consistent. Be loving. Develop openness so that the children in your family know that you’re available and you’ll love them—no matter what. If you’re exhausted or angry, say so. Tell children what you’re feeling so that your body language and words are consistent. Inconsistent messages are often misinterpreted by youth to mean that they have done something wrong.
