SIS October News Fall 22
We Are Solon Strong!
A Note from the Principal
I'd say fall is officially here! It's the perfect weather for sweatshirts, jeans, and sandals! It's also prime time for pumpkin patch visits, bonfires, and family time!
In the classroom, the arrival of October means the end of our beginning of the year honeymoon! Routines and procedures are established, the core content and academic rigor is in full swing, and teachers and students alike are getting more and more comfortable with one another. As we approach this season, we are grateful for your support from home to help students prepare for their academic days be that ensuring a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast, or encouragement to keep reading, keep trying, and keep growing! Truly, thank you!
As we get into the year, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- If your child is going to be absent, please email his/her homeroom teacher and our office, at sisoffice@solon.k12.ia.us. Emailing the office is critically important, especially for changes in end of day routines for kids. Teachers are often unable to check emails until after students leave for the day. Emailing both the classroom teacher and the office helps make sure the message is received and passed along.
- As the weather turns colder, please consider writing your child's name inside his/her coats and/or sweatshirts. Our lost and found is growing. This week the weather is expected to drop to the 50s. Please do encourage your child to bring a coat. Our playground area is quite breezy.
- Buses are at capacity. Please be aware that bus passes are no longer available for students headed to other locations outside of students' regular childcare needs. If your child is headed to a friend's house or other event, arrangements will need to be made outside of our school bus transportation. Thank you for understanding.
- Please take a moment to review our school handbook, particularly as it relates to our cell phone and smart watch policies. We have been reminding more students about the policy this year than in previous years. The policy as written requires that all phones/smart watches/gizmos and other communication devices be silenced or off in bags throughout the school day. If there is a distraction of any kind, the student will be asked to report to the principal's office with the device. The parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up the device. While we understand that parents may reach out to students about end of day changes, it is important that these changes are communicated with our office so that we know any changes are requested by the parent, otherwise, students are expected to follow regular dismissal arrangements.
- Our nurse's office could really use some snack sized baggies. If you are willing and able to donate a box we'd greatly appreciate it! We use them for ice packs when students request them.
I'd also like to take this time to thank our families for supporting our Waffle Bar monthly appreciation for staff! Your generosity is overwhelming and MUCH appreciated! Thank you for giving of your time, your supplies, and for your donations!! It was such a special treat for staff!
Be sure to take a peek at our September pictures and see what great fun we've had this month!
Happy Fall, Y'all!

Additionally, classes competed against one another in an "Empathy Rap-Off" creating a rap song to share what they knew about empathy. Two classes from each grade level were selected by Mrs. Pentico to go face-to-face at our assembly. Those four classes were: Ms. Brimeyer's 4D, Ms. McAtee's 4B, Mrs. Visser's 5B, and Ms. Ford's 5C.
The winning class holds the Orange Chair Trophy for the month of October! This month's Orange Chair winner was Ms. McAtee's 4B Class! Congratulations 4B!
Congratulations to the follow students who were recognized as SIS Stand Out Students who showed great empathy towards others!
