Blue Ridge Dyslexia Notes
Primary characteristics of Dyslexia - Part I
Dyslexia involves difficulty.....
- Reading words in isolation
- Decoding unfamiliar words accurately
- Slow, inaccurate, or labored oral reading
- Poor Spelling
Weaker phonological (sound) awareness also contributes to poor spelling skills. Spelling words are often memorized as a string of letters, versus a word as a whole unit. This causes uncertainty when writing. It is not uncommon to find the same word spelled different ways in a single writing sample.
Featured Famous Dyslexic: Reyn Guyer, Inventor
Reyn (pronounced wren) Guyer didn’t learn he was dyslexic until listening to the explanation of his daughter's dyslexia testing results. He realized they paralleled his own experiences in school growing up.
Reyn Guyer invented the game Twister & the popular Nerf Ball. Both have experienced record sales over the past four decades. Also a musician, Guyer and a daughter have written hit songs for many well known music artists. He says ideas that come to him are gifts. Even today, Reyn continues to work on developing new game concepts.
International Dyslexia Association Definition of Dyslexia:
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling, and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
