Tips for Caregivers as the School Year Wraps Up
Tips from Debbie Reber of Tilt Parenting (5/22/25 newsletter).
- Let go of non-essentials: Ask yourself: What can I say no to this week? Maybe itโs skipping an after-school activity or letting go of a homework battle that isnโt worth the stress.
- Focus on regulation: Prioritize co-regulation over productivity. This might look like getting cozy, lowering the lights, and listening to calming music together for ten minutes after school.
- Name whatโs hard: Normalize feelings (yours and your childโs) about this time of year. I know that everything might feel overwhelming right now. I feel it, too.
- Build in micro-rest for yourself: Even 5 minutes of lying on the floor, stepping outside to feel the sun, or having a โno-talking zoneโ in the car can help you recenter.
- Celebrate survival. Finishing the year, however messy, is an achievement worth honoring. Did you make it through another school day? That counts. Do something (an ice cream stop, movie night, pajama day) to mark the moment and honor the effort it took to get there.
