The Fall Play “Little Women” is days away! Do you have your tickets for this classic drama? Shows are Nov 14-17: Thursday at 7, Saturday at 7, and Sunday at 2. Advance tickets are $6 and are available from a Masquer, Mr. Moreno’s class, or the Bookstore. Don’t miss this high school tradition!

Bring your 2018 tax return and a laptop computer to complete your senior's FAFSA! Students MUST have this completed for college regardless of where they are going! Our counselors will be there to help you! Parents should come to CS208 anytime between 5:30 - 7:00.

Seniors should place their orders for senior signature shirts and sweats during lunch in the Concessions’ Kiosk at the Wildcat Arena this week during lunch, November 4-7. Checks should be made payable to ORHS!

Seniors: Jostens will return to the Main Lobby on Tuesday, November 19, during lunch to collect orders for graduation supplies. You must give the Jostens rep the order during lunch. Mrs. Ledden does not accept orders. Extra packets are available in CS347.

Applications are now open for current sophomores and juniors interested in Governor’s School for 2020. Interested students have been given the information they need to apply and specific dates for teacher recommendation and application deadlines. Below are the dates and information they were given for teacher recommendations:

Governor’s School for the Arts

· Friday, October 25 – All applicants should ask a teacher for a recommendation by this date

· Wednesday, November 20 – All teacher recommendation forms are due to Ms. Redman in the School Counseling office

All Other Governor’s Schools

· Friday, October 19 – All applicants should ask a teacher for a recommendation by this date

· Friday, November 16 – All teacher recommendation forms are due to Ms. Redman in the School Counseling office

Those seniors who have a 3.6 cumulative GPA through the first quarter of this year and who are interested in joining the National Honor Society must pick up a Verification of Interest Form from Ms. Milloway in the school media center. Please be aware of the dates attached in the PDF below! These dates reflect the three weeks’ notice REQUIRED by the ORHS counselors/teachers for College Admissions/Scholarship recommendation letters. Please keep to these deadlines as counselors/teachers are writing many recommendations for multiple students during these dates. We want to write the best recommendations for you that we can so we greatly appreciate this “lead time” to assure that we’ve provided the best letter possible for YOU and YOUR accomplishments these past four years.

If your student was handed a parental consent form to participate in one of the following three surveys for the AP Research class, then please sign the form and have your student return it to the teacher they received it from. If you did not get a form, there are some available in the Library and attached are links to the individual parental consent forms that are available for you to print and turn in to the Library. We are eager to have more participants, so please turn in these forms. The survey project and forms have been vetted by the AP Research staff as well as Mr. McDonald.

Parents of Seniors in English 12 CP - December 17 is the next deadline. Notecards for the second novel are due that day.

Information Overview

What is the AMC 10/12?

The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.

The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below, and covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. Students in grade 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 10. The AMC 12 covers the entire high school curriculum including trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but excluding calculus. Students in grade 12 or below and under 19.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 12.

These competitions are administered around the country on Thursday, January 30, 2020 and Wednesday, February 5, 2020. The AMC 10/12 provides an opportunity for high school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. The AMC 10/12 is the first in a series of competitions that eventually lead all the way to the International Mathematical Olympiad (see Invitational Competitions).

The AMC 10/12 is also available in French, Spanish, large print, and braille.

The Oak Ridge AutoCats won the top award - the Spirit of Joe Marshall Award on Thursday at the 29th Annual Top Wrench competition. This event has become one of the highlights for automotive students. The Spirit of Joe Marshall Spirit is given to the school demonstrating their gracious support of teammates and sportsmanship! Joe Marshall was the creator of #TopWrench. What an honor!!!

Often you will ask your teen, "When can you get help from your teacher?" Their response may go like this..."I have no idea," or "I don't think they do." Well, here is a document JUST FOR YOU! NHS Tutoring—The National Honor Society holds tutoring sessions every week. No matter if you need math help or assistance writing an essay, NHS students are here to help! Come get tutoring relief for assignments on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-3:45.

The Annual Turkey Trot is officially 4 weeks away! This years race will be November 12th from 4-6p at Robertsville Middle School cross country track. Last year we had an incredible turn out of 218 kiddos that participated. We are hoping for even more students to run but we need your help!

The Oak Ridge High School Marching Band is currently in its biggest fundraiser of the year – the Annual Fruit Sale. Orders are being taken by all Band students or on our website at https://shop.floridaindianrivergroves.com/ecommerce/742353. Order by November 11th with delivery on December 13th.

Don’t do citrus? Several other food items are available to order. Donations are also accepted on the website.

Another avenue to help - the Band is ALWAYS looking for donations of the “used, but not being used” instruments in closets, attics and basements. Providing an instrument for students to use at all levels of performance, from the beginner to the advanced, is a large part of the support needed in the Oak Ridge Schools’ Band Program.

The CheerCats will host a fundraiser supper at DosBros Mexican Grill on November 5th from 5 - 8 pm. A portion of the sales will go to the ORHS cheerleaders! (Located in the former Chipotle restaurant).

CASA of the Tennessee Heartland is a non-profit that provides court-appointed special advocates for children in the court systems of Anderson, Blount, and Scott counties. We have fundraising events every other month when we can to raise more money for our organization so that we can reach more children that are in need.

City of Oak Ridge’s Teen Basketball League registration will open on October 21 and will close on December 2. A boy’s and a girl’s division will be offered for the 2019-2020 season with games scheduled to be played on Saturdays beginning January 4, 2020. Players must be no older than 18 on December 1, 2019 to participate and may not be affiliated with any TSSAA basketball programs. Unlike previous seasons, the staff at the front desk will only be able to accept team registration forms and league fees. The additional mandatory paperwork will be taken care of during a team night held prior to the first game. NEW: Work Ethic Distinction for Diploma

Students graduating with a district-developed work ethic distinction shall be recognized at their graduation ceremony. This distinction will be useful for presentation to future employers for work-based learning, apprenticeships, and employment in a chosen field after graduation. Employers throughout Tennessee have indicated that students who present a document such as this, indicating desirable work habits will be given preference for interviews. It’s time for Food City’s School Bucks Program that helps support ORHS-CDC! The program begins Wednesday, September 4, 2019 and ends on May 5, 2020.
