WHAT DOES 85 STAND FOR?
85 is the approximate total number of students that we have not received their choice of learning preference for the new school year!
- 85 students have automatically defaulted to "Blended Learning" setting, since these families did not complete the learning preference survey by the past due deadline of, August 7th! Your choice may be impacted. We are capped at the number of students allowed in each classroom. We are only allowed on average 11 people in a classroom including teaching staff.
- If you know that you want your child to participate in 100% Remote Learning, you MUST select the option using the following link: https://www.nycenet.edu/surveys/learningpreference
- Please visit the Return to School 2020 pages on the website for more information.
Changing Preferences
- If you chose 100% Remote Learning but want to change your child’s preference back to Blended Learning, complete this form again by August 7.
- After August 7, any family who chose 100% Remote Learning will have the option to change back to Blended Learning at a few specific times during the school year (Dates to be announced by the NYCDOE.)

P-EBT Updates and Resources
- We just heard from Hunger Solutions NY that Group 3 is now in full gear with 35,000 cards per day being sent!
- Important Numbers:
- P-EBT Helpline (OTDA): 1-833-452-0096, staffed 8:30am-5:00pm, M-F (can also email otda.sm.eisp.pebt@otda.ny.gov)
- TO REACH A REPRESENTATIVE: Select language then stay on the line. It will cycle through a menu of options, but just stay on the line and do not push anything (making another selection may lead to a frustrating cycle that doesn't end up with a representative!)
- Set up a PIN: 1-888-328-6399 (this is the same number as checking account balance, but different steps)
- Medicaid Helpline: 1-888-692-6116 (if anyone is not sure what zip code to enter when setting up a PIN for Medicaid CBIC)
- Check account balance: 1-888-328-6399 or visit http://www.connectebt.com/Instructions
- Letter from OTDA
- PIN set up instructions (please note that these are different for Group 2 and Group 3):
- Assistance videos from OTDA:
- For Group 2: Activating a NYS Medicaid card for P-EBT food benefits / Activar una tarjeta de Medicaid del estado de Nueva York para beneficios de alimentos P-EBT
- NEW for Group 3: Activating a Pandemic-EBT card to access food benefits / Activar una tarjeta Pandemic-EBT para acceder a los beneficios de alimentos
- We now have a new flyer, created in collaboration with our Youth Food Advocates and Ideas42, with students in Group 3 as the intended audience.
- A reminder that P-EBT is currently $420 per student to cover the period mid-March through the end of June. (There may be some confusion around this, since wave 3 cards have only just started going out.)
Family Income Inquiry Forms for DOE’s Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS)
Please complete this form as soon as possible!
Learning Bridges - FREE CHILDCARE (FOR PARENTS & STAFF)
As the New York City Department of Education resumes in-person schooling this fall, most schools and early childhood programs will operate on a blended learning model. This means that each week, students will have some school days in person, and some school days remotely. Learning Bridges is a new program that will provide free child care options for children from 3-K through 8th grade on days when they are scheduled for remote learning. If you are interested in the Learning Bridges program, please complete this survey
https://prek4all.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ac4kZNaIMaixbc9
The Learning Bridges programs will:
- Be operated by community-based organizations and other partners
- Provide opportunities for children to connect to their remote learning activities
- Include time for art, recreation, and other age-appropriate activities
- Follow the same rigorous health and safety precautions as schools
You can complete this survey, even if you do not yet know your child’s school schedule. The survey is meant to assess interest; this is not a formal application. More information will be shared by the Department of Education (children in 3-K and pre-K) or the Department of Youth & Community Development (children in grades K-8) about a potential placement in the coming weeks. Programs will become available on a rolling basis beginning at the start of school.
You can also call 311 for support in completing the survey.
REMOTE LEARNING DEVICE REQUEST FORM - PLEASE FILL OUT IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS A DEVICE!
iPad Update - IMPORTANT!
For anyone who has a DOE-loaned ipad, we have some important updates for you. It is essential that you take the actions below to ensure your child’s ipad is ready for use for return to school. The first day of school is only a few weeks away, and all students will be working remotely for at least a few days a week. Your child will need their ipad to be ready for learning for the fall. Please note that when we have other updates, we will send messages to you and your iPad on Thursdays, and we will let your schools know about the updates.
To prepare, you MUST
Turn on the iPad
Some iPads have not been turned on all summer. We need you to charge and power up the ipad.
Turn Airplane Mode On and Off
This will reset your internet connection
- Go to Settings
- Find the Airplane Mode button
- Turn Airplane Mode on for ten seconds (button turns green)
- Turn Airplane Mode off and wait until the ipad reconnects to the internet
- You will see the connected icon at the top of the screen
- Go to schools.nyc.gov to make sure your ipad is connected to the internet - all DOE-loaned ipads have internet access.
Sign into Zscaler
In order to ensure your child is using the internet with all the safety the DOE requires and protect your child. You will need your child’s @nycstudents.net account. Once you get that please follow these directions, or see the instructions on our Zscaler page:
- On the main screen, click the Zscaler icon. After clicking the icon, you will be taken to the login page.
- Enter your child’s @nycstudent account (only use the student’s username and password, no need to include @nycstudents to log in), then click the “sign in” button.
- Click on the "allow" button and wait one minute for a connection to be established until you will see the Zscaler screen
- Once the connection is secure, close the app
- That is it. You can use the iPad normally now.
Sign into the Learn at Home App
To get ready for the first day of school, make connecting to learning and support much easier for your child (and you, too!), and allow you to get notifications on the iPad:
- Find the Learn at Home icon on the main screen on the iPad
- Log in the same way you did for Zscaler, using the same @nycstudents.net account (only use the student’s username and password, no need to include @nycstudents to log in)
- From the Learn at Home app your child can access TeachHub, Google Classroom and get help.
Good news! Your child’s iPad is Now a Hotspot
That allows you to connect other devices used for remote learning to the internet. It is easy:
- Go to Settings
- Find Personal Hotspot and click to take you to the login screen
- Select Allow Others to Join
- Devices other students in your house are using for remote learning can be added to that connection
- As a reminder, as with the ipad itself, the hotspot connection is to be used only to access remote learning activities. Any unauthorized use is strictly prohibited.

IMPORTANT FOR STAFF: COVID-19 Reasonable Accommodations Process for Fall 2020
If you are a school-based employee and you are an older adult and/or you have underlying medical condition(s) that create an increased risk of severe illness should you contract COVID-19, you may be eligible for a reasonable accommodation to work remotely for the start of the school year.
If you would like to request such an accommodation, please use the Self-Service Online Leave Application System. Please complete your application as soon as possible and preferably by July 31, 2020 to allow time for you and your school to plan for the fall. Step-by-step application instructions are available on the InfoHub.
Please review the following before you apply:
- A reasonable accommodation to work from home will be considered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and in line with the medical conditions as set forth by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These conditions are not exclusive and are subject to change.
- In order to submit an application, you must provide documentation at the same time. The medical documentation must:
o Be signed by a licensed medical practitioner, and
o Clearly indicate what your underlying medical condition(s) and/or other factors are AND how they place you at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
o Note: no documentation is required to verify that you are age 65 or over as of December 31, 2020. Any other age based request will require documentation from a licensed medical practitioner as to how your age and any underlying medical condition(s) place you at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
- A reasonable accommodation to work remotely due to COVID-19 will only be granted based on your own underlying medical conditions. If you are unable to work at a school for other reasons (for instance, child care, or out of concern for the health of others in your household), you may seek other options, such as a leave of absence, but you are not eligible for a reasonable accommodation to work remotely under this policy.
- Central, field and borough staff can also apply through this process but may want to wait for more guidance regarding the DOE’s plan for returning to offices before considering submission of an application for reasonable accommodations.
For more information, visit the HR Connect Employee Portal. Once you have logged in with your DOE User ID and Password, search for “COVID-19 Reasonable Accommodations”.

Best Practices to Prevent Unwanted Activities on Zoom
In preparation for the start of school this September—whether in a blended or remote setting—all DOE staff are reminded that they should follow best practices when using Zoom for video conferencing. When using this platform, you must protect the education and safety needs of students, parents, families, and staff, as well as take precautions to ensure that users who participate on this platform do so with good intentions. Like most public online platforms, there is the potential for disruption by persons (who may or may not be invited), that can subject participants to inappropriate language and "zoom bombing" visuals.
The DOE has compiled a list of best practices "Protecting Zoom from Unwanted Activities" to ensure your sessions are secure.

♦ Step-by-step ways to create an antiracist classroom culture (and bookshelf!)
♦ Student activities that promote understanding and discussion about race
