Hatherly Happenings

This week we read about what makes a family. We heard about the different people who make up a family and the similarities that all of our families have. In addition, many of our students were able to explain to Mr. Adams, DEI Director, all of the differences and similarities we have been celebrating.

Mrs. Ward will be inviting our new kindergarten families to join her on a virtual call Monday, May 24 at 5:00 p.m. This call will be to answer any questions families may have about the upcoming school year. Parents will have a more in depth opportunity to tour classrooms, meet the staff and ask questions the day before school starts in the fall.

Incoming kindergarten students will be scheduled for a screening appointment on the morning of June 4th. More information will be distributed to these parents.

Mrs. Ward is lucky enough to be pen pals with many of the Hatherly students. In the picture below you can see many of the kindergarten students delivering their personal letters to her mailbox. Yes, everyone gets a written response back each time. Writing practice in a fun way!

Planting potatoes with John Belber from Holly Hill Farm! Farmer John cut the potatoes in half and then the students planted them. Each half will produce 8-10 potatoes!

In 2nd Grade we spent two weeks learning about bees, their purpose, and how they work together as a team; just like we do in our classroom! We ended our lesson by building bee diagrams that include all the parts of a bee.

The most recent DESE guidelines will prohibit us from having a traditional Fifth Grade Recognition event. However, we will be inviting all of the fifth grade students to celebrate during a car parade. Last year we found this to be a big hit. Teachers will line the driveway on June 17th at 4:30 while students and the families drive through in their decorated cars.

Additional plans will be shared within the next couple of weeks.

A big thank you goes out to South Shore Children's Dentistry for donating toothbrushes and floss to every student at Hatherly! They also provided a great video about visiting the dentist!

Top 5 things you should know about your child's oral health:

1. Brush your child's teeth twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste, after breakfast and at bedtime.

2. Water is the best beverage choice for the whole family! Drink plenty throughout the day.

3. For between meal snacks, choose foods like fruits and vegetables. Limit sugar and starchy carbohydrates.

4. Be sure to floss your child's teeth every day! Removing the bacteria is an important part of oral health.

5. Visit the dentist regularly!
