Back to School Night for elementary schools for the 2023-2024 school year will be on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

At Monday night’s school board meeting Ms. Candice Ray was approved to be our new vice principal. You may recognize her name because she has served as an assistant principal at Pence Middle School for the past 5 years. We’re excited to have her join us beginning on July 1! Additionally, Ms. Edy Depoy will be our new reading specialist as Ms. Jackie Croy begins her retirement. As a growing school (with a large group of rising 1st graders), Ms. Brooke Jamison will be moving from 3rd grade to 1st grade to reduce class sizes. Ms. Erica Wood will be new to our school and joining our 3rd grade team. Finally, Mr. Trice will be moving from 5th grade to our Special Education Department as Mr. Corey Shifflett transfers to Spotswood High School and Ms. Caffo will be moving to 5th grade from 2nd grade (as we have a smaller group of rising 2nd graders next year). I’m excited about the new folks joining our team and other changes we’ve made as we look forward to the 23-24 school year!

Summer Reading Resources

There will be an orange Field Day paper coming home this week with all K-5 students regarding what they need to wear to school on Field Day and what else they need to bring with them on Field Day. It has both English and Spanish versions on the same paper.

If you are a parent that said you would volunteer to work a Field Day station, you'll be receiving your packets by Tuesday May 30 or at the latest, Wednesday May 31. Please check your child's backpack and folder for this information.

Thanks to everyone who sent in donations of items and those who'll be working stations. Field Day happens because of YOU! We are so appreciative of your support.

As the end of the school year approaches, we ask that you prepare to come and pick up any medication your child has kept here during the school year. School policy states that medication must be brought and picked up by parents. Any over the counter medications left at the school after June 6 will be discarded. Please contact our school nurse at 540-438-1965 if you have any questions.

Spring pictures need to be returned if you haven't already done so. If you are interested in purchasing any please see the photo envelope for package pricing and payment options and if you are not purchasing any please send the entire package back.

What a lot of stuff we have that doesn’t belong to us! Our lost and found items are on display in the foyer! If you are at school for any reason (or simply want to pop in), PLEASE look through our lost and found and take any items that belong to your child(ren). All items that are not claimed by June 15th will be donated to Goodwill.

Once all information is provided, you will receive a scheduled screening appointment for a later date to see if your child qualifies for our program. DO NOT fill out the online registration!

KINDERGARTEN

We encourage families to complete the registration online using the link that will be provided on our website www.rcps.net starting March 7th (Be sure to select 2023-24 school year). If you are unable to access the online registration form, you may stop by Mountain View on Monday through Friday between 8:30-3:30 and we will gladly assist you.

NOTE: A copy of a current physical examination form and a complete immunization record MUST be provided before a child begins school.

Please sign up for text notifications to receive important information about closings, delays, upcoming events, bus delays, etc. In order to receive the text, you must send "YES" to 67587. You will automatically receive a confirmation after you send. This will only work for the major phone companies and will not work for straight talk or any prepaid phone. If you have any questions, please contact the office at 438-1965.

If your child is going to be absent from school, please call the office at 540-438-1965 or email mvesattendance@rockingham.k12.va.us. If you are planning to take a vacation or your child will be out of school for an extended period of time, please contact the office. Thank you!

The parent portal is an online portal accessible anywhere on the web that parents can log in to and see all of their children in one place, their grades, assignments, scores, attendance, schedules, and teacher comments for each school your children attend.

Parents need to contact the school to get access information to create an account in PowerSchool.

Free and Reduced Meal Applications are now available for the 22-23 school year. Although all children are currently eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch meals during the school day, completing a meal application is still recommended if you believe you qualify. The qualification letter that is sent back to the household can be used for proof of eligibility for other program benefits and discounts, such as the Emergency Broadband Benefit. To apply, please complete the online meal application at www.myschoolapps.com, or fill out the attached application and return to your child's school or mail to: Food and Nutrition Services, 1210 N. Liberty St., Harrisonburg, VA, 22802.
