GMS Students and Staff Raise Money for Cancer Research
Pennies for Patients is an annual National Junior Honor Society sponsored classroom competition that benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Indiana. In the last 12 years, Goshen Middle School has raised a total of $34,081.17 for the Indiana Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s cancer research. The winners of the competition were Ms. Shoup-Hill's class raising $929 and Ms. Slabaugh's class raising $671.
"By itself, a penny on the ground, a nickel here, a dollar in a pocket doesn’t seem like a lot of money. As you have heard, when gathered together, pennies become many, in our case, over $3150.00. We, students and staff, at GMS, have shown by working together as one, we can make a difference in the world. On behalf of the National Junior Honor Society, I would like to say thank you GMS for your overwhelming generosity and reminding all of us about the true meaning of sharing and giving." - Ms. Sandy Bartley, NJHS Coordinator.
Amy King Supports GMS Families
National School Social Work Week is March 1-7, 2015, to recognize the unique contributions of professional licensed school social workers in improving student academic achievement and social success. Governor Michael R. Pence has also proclaimed this week as School Social Work Week in the State of Indiana. The School Social Work Association of America, Indiana School Social Work Association and the Department of Education encourage schools and parents to take a moment to recognize their local licensed school social worker during National School Social Work Week!
Ms. King helps students at GMS in many ways, including making home visits, facilitating groups, and connecting families with community resources in times of need. She helps organize our PBS program, Positive Behavior Support System, and has taught curriculum to 6th graders, including what it means to have a growth mindset. She is taking up knitting, jewelry making, and magic to show students it is never too late to learn something new. Thanks for all that you do, Ms. King!

Protect Against Measles
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has released the following information: In the United States, we are currently experiencing a large, multi-state outbreak of measles linked to an amusement park in California. Measles is a highly contagious disease. It can be serious for your young children. Protect your children by making sure they get MMR vaccine according to CDC's recommended schedule. The large, ongoing measles outbreak in the United States likely started with a traveler who got measles overseas and then visited the amusement park while he or she was contagious, spreading the disease to others. Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. In fact, if one person has it, 9 out of 10 of the people around him or her will also become infected if they are not immune (through measles vaccination or having had measles before).
If you have other questions, please call your school nurse at Goshen Middle School, 574-533-0391, ext. 2704.
Department of Education Gives Message to Parents Regarding I-step+
"We are trying to provide everything we can from the Department level for your use at the local level to communicate the importance of student involvement in ISTEP+. To that end, we have an upcoming parent video communication, that includes talking points regarding ISTEP+ and the importance of participation. We have also updated the Parent FAQ, with stronger language in the question regarding, “Why should my child take the test?” Please remind families, that the greatest reason for participation is they should want to know how their child will perform. This is a test over new standards and in a new and more rigorous college and career ready approach to measuring academic achievement."
