WEP Funds Mini-grants in our Classrooms
Shout Out! to The Wilson Education Partnership (WEP) for funding mini-grants for 18 of our educators - a total investment of $12,520!!! We love the picture of Elm City MS Art Teacher Michelle Driver when she was surprised by the WEP Prize Patrol! We are incredibly grateful to WEP and all of the local businesses that support our schools through WEP. Many of the grants were funded by a generous donation from Merck to support STEM-based projects in our classrooms!! Great coverage in The Wilson Times.
WAAT vs. WECA
Shout Out! to Wilson Academy of Applied Technology (WAAT) and Wilson Early College Academy (WECA) for beginning what they hope will become a tradition. In an effort to build community between the two early colleges, Principals Krystal Cox (WAAT) and Randy St. Clair (WECA) decided to challenge each other to a flag football game. The final score was 19-12, and WECA was victorious. Both teams played great and those in attendance, including Superintendent Dr. Mills, enjoyed the game. They also held a balloon release in memory of Chazz Pender, the WECA student who passed away on Sept. 20.
Smart Cookies
Superintendent Dr. Mills and Board of Education Member Henry Mercer had a great time celebrating Hearne ES Teacher of the Year Serita Braswell (back row, far right) and her class of Smart Cookies on Oct. 24! Dr. Mills read a positive statement about each student, gave each of them a certificate and shared with them why their teacher is so special. They all enjoyed cookies provided by our Smart Cookies partner - Chick-fil-A - and laughed the whole time with Dr. Mills and Mr. Mercer. Smart Cookies has been an initiative in our elementary schools for the past three school years.
SkillsUSA Champs
Shout Out! to the Beddingfield HS students who participated in the 2019 SkillsUSA North Carolina State Leadership Workshop in Fayetteville from Sept. 29-Oct. 1. The students from left to right are Jasmine, Hunter, Bashir and Kansas. Bashir, Kansas and Hunter earned Beddingfield’s first-ever SkillsUSA State Leadership Awards. With more than 115 students competing, Hunter placed third in Quiz Bowl and Audio Creed; Kansas placed fourth in Themed Poster and Bashir placed fourth in PSA Video. The students are under the guidance of Public Safety Instructor and SkillsUSA Advisor James Cappelletti.
Rock Ridge ES - Top Proficiency
During the Oct. 29 Principals Meeting, Superintendent Dr. Mills presented Rock Ridge ES Principal Emily Chilton with a banner celebrating her school's success last year. For the past two schools years, she has received this banner for Rock Ridge having the highest level of proficiency out of all 26 schools in the school district according to state standards.
Forest Hills MS - Highest Growth
During the Oct. 29 Principals Meeting, Superintendent Dr. Mills presented Forest Hills MS Principal FT Franks (far right) and former Principal JT Tribula (currently at Beddingfield HS) with a banner celebrating the school's academic success last year. For the past two school years, Forest Hills has received this banner for having the highest amount of growth in the district based on state standards!
Exceeding Growth
During the Oct. 29 Principals Meeting, Superintendent Dr. Mills presented banners to Wilson Early College Academy Principal Randy St. Clair and former WECA Principal/current Fike HS Principal Nelson Johnston; Winstead ES Principal Claudia Spencer; New Hope ES Principal Crystal Whitley; and Gardners ES Principal Cheryl Baggett. These schools have done an amazing job and exceeded growth the past three school years according to state performance standards!
New Bobcats
Barnes ES would like to Shout Out! their newest Bobcats - PE Teacher Mr. Willoughby and SEL Lead Teacher Ms. Richardson! Coach Willoughby jumped right into his role and is also working with teachers in the classroom. Ms. Richardson has done an amazing job connecting with students and assisting teachers with morning meeting activities.
Top Therapists
Shout Out! to our WCS Physical Therapists - Helen Davis, PT, and Donna Howell, PTA, during National Physical Therapy Month! They serve all of our Exceptional Children who have physical therapy needs, which includes completing screenings and evaluations. We applaud their hard work and love for our students!
High Growth

Shout Out! to Vester Auto Group
Shout Out! to Chris Vester from Vester Auto Group for speaking with the Hunt HS Career Management class on Oct. 23 through the Wilson Education Partnership's Career Connections Program! The students loved his presentation, and he got them up and moving. Mr. Vester shared about careers with Vester, interviewing tips and how to be your best self. Vester Auto Group is a huge supporter of WCS - the company provides the one-year lease of a car for our Teacher of the Year and donates 800+ backpacks a year to Operation Backpack. Mr. Vester also serves on the Wilson Education Partnership Board. We appreciate the support!
Pumpkin Chunkin' Contest Runner Up
Shout Out! to students at Wilson Academy of Applied Technology (WAAT) who built a trebuchet and won second place in the Farmville Pumpkin Chunkin’ contest! They catapulted their pumpkin 131 feet! Congratulations to the students for their hard work and to Science Teacher Karen Carlos for assigning a project that put science and math into action!
