May 12, 2023
Dear Brunswick High School Community,
Brunswick High School’s 2022-2023 Final Exams will take place June 9 – June 15 (daily schedule below). Exams will be administered to all students in grades 9-11. During finals week, teachers will provide a final exam (essay, multiple choice, etc.) or final experience (project, performance, etc.). The specific assessment format will be determined by the classroom teacher. Final course grades along with other data will help guidance counselors and administrators identify students who could benefit from additional time over the summer to complete and pass their course(s). Here are some additional important details about final exam week:
Prior to exam day, teachers will review with each class all material that will be assessed on the final exam.
Teachers will provide a final exam review sheet for each course.
Teachers will review with their class how the final exam impacts the final course grade.
Students are required to attend school only when they have an exam.
Bus transportation will be provided in the morning and at 11:30 a.m. when students are dismissed each day. A student may leave prior to 11:30 a.m. dismissal with parent permission. Please have your student drop off a parental note at the main office in the morning. The afternoon bus will depart at 2:15.
The cafeteria and library will be open for quiet study and for students awaiting dismissal.
Region 10 classes will not take place during final exams.
Snacks are available during break time and a bag lunch upon dismissal.
Ms. Vogel and Ms. Kunhardt will lead stress management activities like playdough, games, coloring and walks with Elmer (our therapy dog) in the cafeteria.
The final exam/experience will take place during the period scheduled for that class. If a student has an excused absence for the appointed exam period, please contact the teacher via phone or e-mail to reschedule.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!
This year, we chose a theme to focus on: The Way You Speak To Yourself Matters! We are encouraging students to reflect on how they speak to themselves and reframe their thoughts.
Self-talk can be tough–we are often our toughest critic. Far too often, we hear students talking about themselves in negative and hurtful ways. “I suck at this–I’m just bad at everything I do” or “I’m always in such a bad mood, things never get better.” As adults, when we hear negative self-talk, we can encourage students to think and speak to themselves differently. When helping teens reframe negative thinking and self-talk, we don’t want to minimize and invalidate their feelings. For example: if you hear your teen say something like “I suck at this–I’m bad at everything” you could respond with “It sounds like you’re having a hard time with this and are really frustrated. And I also know that you don’t suck at everything and there are lots of things you're good at.” In all likelihood, your student knows that they don’t “suck at everything” but when things are hard, they can slip into negative all or nothing thoughts. It’s important that we help them reflect and reframe–the more we do this, the more they will do it themself! We should also model this ourselves. Another practice to help improve your teens' positive self-talk is to encourage them to find validation from themself instead of others–this is a great practice for little ones as well! When something good happens, before you say how proud/excited/happy you are–ask how they are feeling about it. This gives them the opportunity to express their own pride and joy first. Then let them know how you’re feeling.
On Friday May 19th the BHS social workers will have a table during lunch with resource cards, mental health awareness stickers, a few activities about positive self talk! We are also asking that everyone wear green on the 19th as well! Please remind your student to wear green and pop by our table on Friday during lunch!
If you are concerned about your student, please reach out to their school counselor: Mary Moore (R10, OCLC, ESOL), Diane Cook (A-F), Scott Bradley (G-N), Christina Ring (O-Z). You can also reach out to Meredith Vogel (general education social worker) or Mary Kunhardt (special education social worker).
BHS Community Needs YOU!
What? Let's end our year of supporting students in Brunswick with one last community effort! We have a district-wide need for :
- New or gently used sneakers from little kids size 12 through adult
- New socks of every kid and adult size
- Cleats!! This is a new item TEAN is collecting, in response to a constant need. We mostly need new or used soccer cleats for kids size 1 through adult, but welcome cleats for lacrosse, football, softball, baseball, and other sports that need cleats.
When? The drive takes place from May 22nd-29th
How? Kate Furbish School, Harriet Beecher Stowe School, Brunswick Junior High and Brunswick High will have drop off bins in the lobby, which will be accessible during school hours. Also, donors can drop off items anytime in the bin behind Hawthorne School, at 46 Federal Street. The bin is accessed via Green St and is in the back parking lot.
Thank you for helping Brunswick students have a great spring and summer!

Attention families of the Class of 2023
Help and Donations needed for the Senior Carnival!
May is here and that means the start of all the senior celebrations! A committee of parents, with faculty and student guidance, has planned the SENIOR CARNIVAL for the evening of Tuesday, May 23 following Senior Awards Night. Now we need volunteers, supplies, and financial donations to make this event a success. Please visit the "Parents of the BHS Class of 2023" Facebook group or contact the family of a senior for links to the fundraising and volunteer signup pages. Thank you in advance for your support!!
Student Shout Out!
The aquatic ecosystems that we have constructed were designed and developed by Levi Wilson
- a junior and Luca Grady - a sophomore. These two students have been doing an amazing job
at observing and analyzing the necessary conditions needed for these varied freshwater fish to
flourish and grow. As part of an extension project, these students will hopefully participate in
lessons next year - creating living seawalls as part of a collaborative experience with the Living
Seawalls research project led by researchers from the Sydney Institute of Marine Science in
Australia. Living Seawalls offer solutions to marine habitat loss associated with urbanization of
coastlines.
Thank you to Ms. Manousos, Mr. Thomas, Ms. Shipp, and Mr. McCullough for your encouragement in this epic project and for helping to create an environment for our students to explore.

State House Field Trip
Mr. Clark’s Rights & Responsibilities of Citizenship and Mr. Lynch’s AP Government & Politics classes took a field trip to the State House as guests of Brunswick/Harpswell Representatives Arford, Ankeles, and Golek, and of Senator Daughtry. They were recognized by the House and had an opportunity to speak with Governor Janet Mills. The Dragons left their mark in the capital and were able to write their names in a closed off part of the dome dating back to the 1800s.
Chess with the Principal
Mr. Henninger took some time to play chess with Students during break last week!
He may not have won but he had a lot of fun and we think the students did too!
BHS Senior Prom Helpers
BHS Seniors, Ryan Couture, Adam Baker and Brady McQuaid, in Woodworking class created rustic cupcake stands for the Senior Prom to go along with the forest theme! Thank you Ryan, Adam, and Brady!
