October Newsletter
October is going to be FABULOUS as two of my favorite events are on the horizon: Homecoming and Parent/Teacher Conferences! I love explaining Edgerton's version of Homecoming to families that are new to our area. In Edgerton, the entire community embraces homecoming and it really is a special time. We'll have some special dress up days that your child will bring home information about. The football players come over and read books to our classrooms which is so special. On Friday, October 13th at 9:45 we'll have the Mini Parade (see map below) where you can come and watch the K-5 students. After school there is the more traditional parade, and then of course, kick off where I'm sure the Tide will dominate their opponent.
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday, October 17th, from 3:45 - 7:45 and Thursday, October 19th, from 11:45 - 7:45. We always have a tremendous turn out for this event which is an important opportunity for families and teachers to share information about someone very special....your child! On September 25th you should have received a note from your child's teacher which outlines some important steps that will take place as we arrange a date/time for the conference. It also had a bottom portion which you could return informing us of other staff that you would like to attend the conference, and also confirming the correct e-mail address for you. On Friday, October 6th be looking for an e-mail from your child's teacher where you will be able to schedule the date/time of your conference.
I can't wait to see you at these upcoming events. As always, please know the privilege that I believe it to be to spend time each day with your child/children.
Respectfully,
Alice Redalen

I Need To Stay Home If....
As we enter the cold and flu season, we thought we'd share this graphic as a way to help families know when a student should stay home. Additinal information can be found found on the school district's website at https://www.edgerton.k12.wi.us/page/health-office-nurse. As always, please reach out if you have any questions.
October Menu's
Free and Reduced School Meals
Sometimes families may be experiencing hardships that make it difficult, if not impossible, for them to afford school meals for their children. If this is the case for your family, please consider filling out the application below to see if your children would qualify to have free meals, or meals at a reduced price. Of special note is that if your family qualified last year and things have not improved, you must fill out the form again to re-qualify. Please don't delay as charges can add up quickly.
Snacks
If possible, please remember to send a snack to school with your child. Edgerton Outreach is happy to provide bags of dry cereal to support our student needs, but over the course of just a couple of days 175 bags of cereal were gone. If your family can provide a snack for your child please do so. Thanks for understanding!
Rascal Community Club (RCC) Trunk or Treat Event
We are excited to announce that RCC is hosting a Trunk or Treat event again this year for Community Elementary and Yahara Families. It is such a fun event! They are looking for families or businesses that would like to register to hand out candy or treats. Click on the picture and you will be taken to a site where you can register a vehicle for this event. Vehicle registration ends on the 23rd. Registered vehicles can set up from 5 pm - 6 pm. The event takes place on October 27th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the High School student parking lot.
Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Community Elementary October 16-19th! This is a very exciting week for the students and teachers at school! It will be open to families after school on Monday and Wednesday 3:00-3:30 pm and during conferences on Tuesday and Thursday until 7:00 pm. Families will have the opportunity to buy books for your child's classroom so look for the teacher's wish lists at the book fair. All of the profits from the book fair are used to buy books for the classroom libraries. More information will be coming home with the students the week of October 9th. If you'd like to volunteer at the book fair to check students out please contact Angie Olstad by October 5th at: angie.olstad@edgerton.k12.wi.us or 608-561-6010 x11293. All volunteers will need to fill out the district volunteer form that can be found HERE.
SEL Updates
Do you know that SEL stands for social and emotional learning? This teaching ties into the district's circle of excellence and our work around students' social and emotional well being. Our SEL work helps us to ensure that students have a safe and positive environment where all students feel that they are valued and that they belong.
Some of our ways that we support SEL within Edgerton is that students have a Life Skills class, a social skills program designed to increase students social competence. We have monthly themes, where we teach students specific social skills and we recognize these students at the end of the month. This is also the district's first year having Mrs. Whitney as the school's dean of students. We also use Tider Tickets to boost positive behaviors in the school, celebrate with community events, gather for school wide assemblies, and many other SEL practices.
During the month of October our monthly theme is “Being an Upstander.” Being an upstander is about standing up to, and supporting someone. This correlates with October’s National Bullying Prevention month. Some quick ways you can teach your child about being an upstander is:
Remind them to say, “Stop.”
Get others to say, “Stop.”
Helping someone in need
Being a buddy to someone
Talking to an adult

Important Halloween Information
Halloween is fast approaching! We have chosen to include this information with the hope that you may better understand the guidelines of appropriate costume dress for students on Tuesday, October 31st. A parade for students and staff only will be held in the morning with classroom parties held later in the day. Please let your child’s teacher know if you do not want them to participate in the parade and party as an alternative fall activity is being planned.
Please encourage your children to choose positive characters or representations and dissuade them from selecting masks and/or costumes that display a bloody, ravaged or macabre appearance. Oftentimes these scare our younger students. Please do not bring products such as hair coloring, makeup, or face paint to school. If students wish to remove parts of their costumes after the parade and they are not able to fit into their backpack, we are asking that families please provide a bag/tote labeled with the students name.
If you are bringing treats for your student’s classroom, we ask that you drop off your treat labeled with the classroom teacher’s name at Door 100 or that they can be brought in your students backpack. Staff members will be on hand to receive your classroom treat and get it to the appropriate classroom. Additionally, due to health and safety protocols, treats must be store bought.
Substitute Teacher or Support Staff Positions
Are you interested in flexible or full-time work? Would you like to have the same schedule as your children? Please consider signing up with Teachers On Call to be a substitute teacher or support staff for our school district. A teaching degree is NOT required to be a substitute teacher, and individuals with a high school diploma can work in a support staff position. For more information on how to apply you can visit teachersoncall.com or reach out to 800-713-4439.
