District Update - March 19

Superintendent's Message
While a few days of cold are still in the cards, spring will be here before we know it and so will the fourth quarter!
This time of year usually yields a great deal of excitement and anticipation as the days start getting longer and as we prepare for the final months of the school year. Our students and staff have worked incredibly hard, and I trust that our Midview Schools family will keep pushing to finish on a high note of strength and perseverance!
While our students and staff remain focused on the academic and extracurricular tasks ahead, I encourage our community and families to reserve space in their schedules for some of the final events of the year. Events such as the NHS Induction Ceremony, MHS Spring Musical, West Invention Convention, Harlem Wizard's Night, East Stem Night, various choir & band concerts, and MHS ARTastic are perfect opportunities to join us on campus! I can assure you, any time spent celebrating our student's talents and accomplishments is time well spent. Please regularly check our online district and building calendars for more information.
As always, your continued involvement and support are paramount to our success, and I thank all of you for your contributions.
Take care,
Dr. Willingham
Issue 4 Tax Comparison Tool
As we have explained, Issue 4 allows Midview Local Schools to maintain current levels of operation, without asking our community for additional money.
In our continued efforts of transparency, we are excited to share a useful tool that will show each community member their current tax rates under the emergency levies and the rate they would pay under the substitute levy! Look up your address, locate your exact property, and view your current and projected property tax rates.
Disclaimer: The Lorain County Auditor's Office supports that the estimates provided in this web application are fair. It is important to note that the millage rate for the substitute levy has decreased slightly due to new growth in the district. As such, tax calculations under the substitute levy are, in fact, slightly less than under the emergency levies. This is accurate.
The Importance of the Property Tax Rollback for the Substitute Levy
What is the Rollback?
Property Tax Rollbacks are a form of property tax relief in which every residential property owner is eligible to receive a 10% and 2.5% rollback. Ohio uses the term "rollback" in describing this program, but it is actually a reduction of an individual homeowner's property tax bill.
The State's Breakdown of Rollbacks
In 2013, the state of Ohio altered this program. For levies passed prior to November 2013, residential and agricultural property owners receive a 10% rollback. The 2.5% rollback, or owner-occupied credit, is also applied to residential property tax calculations.
For levies passed after November 2013 that include an increase in funding, these two rollbacks are not afforded to the property owner.
The Substitute Levy & Rollback
Because the substitute levy is simply a combined renewal of the March 2012 and February 2013 emergency levies, the property tax rollback provision would still apply!

East Introduces School-Wide Upcycled Arcade Design Challenge
Yesterday, East Intermediate kicked off its school-wide Middie Makers Upcycled Arcade Design Challenge with an informational assembly! Guest speaker Nicole McGee from Upcycle Parts Shop shared the environmental benefits of reusing and how secondhand materials can be creatively transformed.
East STEM teacher Kim Kauffman introduced the upcycling challenge and shared the short documentary and inspiration behind the project, ‘Caine’s Arcade.'
Homerooms will begin planning their own arcade designs and developing a building plan after spring break. At least 18 games will be available for families to view and enjoy at the district K-6 STEM Night on April 25! Read more about the design challenge and the grant Midview East was awarded for this project here.
Lorain County Alliance of Black School Educators Award
Midview Middle School is proud to share that Madison McClinton has been recognized as an Outstanding Student for Academic Achievement from LCABSE in February. This is a great achievement and Madison and her family members are excited to have received this award. Please congratulate Madison when you see her in the hallways and classrooms!
State Route 83 and 303 Closed
As a reminder, the intersection of State Route 83 and 303 is closed for at least 90 days. This closure will affect a few of our bus routes, specifically buses 18,17,25, and 34. Though some buses aren't directly impacted by the closure, the detour may still cause some time delays due to the increased flow of traffic in different areas.
Please remember to check StopFinder, as our transportation department staff will do their best to keep families updated. Thank you for your patience as we navigate the turnarounds and detours required to pick up and drop off students safely.
March Pizza Night
Midview Compass Committee's next Marcos Pizza Night will benefit our Midview East 5th graders! Support our local Grafton Marcos, Midview Compass Committee, and our Midview students by placing an order on March 21. When ordering, please mention a fifth-grade teacher’s name to receive credit for the purchase. The teacher with the most orders will win a FREE class pizza party.
The Compass Committee is grateful for the community’s support of all their fundraisers. They look forward to giving back in the coming months in support of STEM Night, a scholarship for a senior, and After Prom.
