John Champe Knightly News
August 2022
Time to get ready to be ready!
Where has the summer gone?!
We hope you've had time to do what and go where you need to recharge for the upcoming school year. We are so excited to welcome our knights, both old and new, to what will be our best year yet as we celebrate a decade of excellence at John Champe High School!
For families new to JCHS, you can expect newsletters on a bi-weekly basis throughout the year. Occasionally, you may see a class-specific mailing (especially for our seniors), but you can always check our website for updates or changes.
As a reminder, there isn't a specific school supply list for high school. Teachers will share any required or recommended materials during the first week of classes so students can get what they need for success.
Decade of Excellence
This year marks the tenth academic school year at John Champe High School. While we know the whole year will be fantastic, we have plans in place to celebrate this momentous occasion in our school's history in conjunction with homecoming. We invite you to attend a celebration before the Homecoming Football Game vs. Osbourn Park on Friday, September 30.
We would be remiss if we didn't express how much we will need support from community families and stakeholders to ensure successful anniversary events this year. If you, relatives, or businesses are able to contribute, please consider doing so at whatever level is within your means. When the online payment portal opens for this school year, you'll see corresponding items there to select and pay for your level of sponsorship or another varying amount that suits you. We truly appreciate you and your generosity!
Clinic News
Medications: Loudoun County Public Schools requires a new provider/physician orders each school year for the medication or specialized care which your child receives at school. If your child will continue to need medication or specialized health care at school, you and your child’s licensed healthcare provider must complete and sign the proper form(s). Please note that parents may not amend the provider’s order for managing the child’s medical condition.
The required forms are available in the health office at your child’s school or online at www.lcps.org. Click on the “Families” tab and the forms will be found under Medication at School. The forms should be returned, along with the appropriate medication, in the original, pharmacy labelled container, the week before school starts to the Loudoun County Public School that your child will be attending. Please refer to the “Medication at School Guidelines” for further information regarding medication at school.
Vaccination updates: See the .pdf below for important updates to required vaccinations for the 2022-23 school year, per Virginia House Bill 1090. Of importance for high school is for rising seniors to receive a dose of the Meningococcal Vaccine prior to the start of school on August 25. If you have difficulty opening the .pdf, please ensure you're viewing this newsletter from a browser by clicking on the heading within the body of the email. It should launch a tab in your internet browser from which you can click on active .pdfs.
Senior Class of 2023
Senior year?! Can you believe it?! We can hardly wait to get started with you. So, let's get started!
Paint the lot: Would you like to make a literal mark on school grounds? You can paint your parking space in whatever clever, yet appropriate, way you'd like. You'll pay $20 via the online payment portal when it opens ("Class of 2023 Paint the Lot") and submit your design by filling out this Google Form no later than noon on August 15. Paint times are 9am-3:30pm on August 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24.
Please join us for Senior Sunrise at 6am on August 25 (the first day of school). It will be a fun way to start the academic year, plus there will be donuts.
Stay tuned for info on senior portrait sessions if you missed the previous ones.
Though we haven't had the first day of school yet, you might be looking ahead and a little curious about your last day of school, which just so happens to be your graduation day: Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at 7pm at EagleBank Arena (George Mason University). We will have plenty of festivities before then, including mandatory rehearsals, so please plan to be available in the weeks leading up to graduation. Note: this is the day after the Memorial Day holiday, so please plan accordingly.
Ways to be involved
Over the next few weeks, we will be updating club offerings and opening the club proposal form for students interested in starting a new club. Each newsletter will have a section about ways for students to be active at school in clubs, honor societies, athletics, and service to the community. Stay tuned for those updates and the fall club fair when we return to school at the end of the month. Start thinking: what will your Champe legacy be? How will you be involved and make a difference?
School Counseling
Student Schedules
Student schedules will be available in StudentVue and ParentVue on August 15. Students will be able to request a virtual meeting for August 16 with their School Counselor to discuss any questions, concerns and/or requests with their schedule. An email will be sent through Naviance with details of how to schedule a virtual meeting and who is their school counselor.
Seniors
We will be hosting a Senior Parent night about the College Application Process in early September. Also, School Counselors will hold individual meetings with all seniors to discuss their postsecondary plans with additional details about the college application process. Unofficial transcripts will be available in StudentVUE and ParentVUE under the Documents tab August 15.
We look forward to working with our students and families this school year!
